So I've been reading a bunch of different tactica sites and there just seems to be very little converasion about the special characters that the Tau have at their hands/ethereals. Was wondering if any of you had any advice when it came to whether or not there are uses for them in reasonably competitive lists, or whether they're completely not worth the points.

Short version is that each special character is simply outdone by leaner/cheaper HQ models (non-named Crisis Suits).

An argument could be made for taking Commander Farsight in a list designed specifically for his large retinue he gets (called the Farsight Bomb), but it's not as effective as spreading your points amongst other, better options.

As for Ethereals, the risk of losing one is too great to take. Army-wise morale saves if one dies is really, really bad.
