a whirlwind is pretty useless in the new edition, so go with two vindicators, or as i normally prefer, what ever you like, its a game! go for the fun try preds if you want but they have lousy side armour =/

I would go with the whirlwind only because you will be playing tau.

My BF plays Tau and fire warriors use a lot of cover and the whirlwinds no cover missiles is good anti Tau. The range is better too.

Go whirlwind dude, I have a mate that plays Tau and if your friend plays anything like him he'll just 'camp' his army and annoy the hell out of you so a whirlwind is great for hiding and firing indirectly at him, if nothing else he'll be wary of it even if nothing hits him.

Vindicator is a better all-rounder vehicle, but like others have said Whirlwinds are a deathblow to Tau FWs. If you know you wont face anyone else until you can purchase a second vehicle, go with Whirlwind. Otherwise a Vindicator.

Vindicators are cheap (ish) for S10 AP2 Large blast template but get two of them

Which one? Both. It's good to have more tools in the toolbox. Which first? I dunno. If he uses more firewarriors, particularly from cover, then the whirlwind by far. If he has more crisis suits and vehicles, the vindicator. Either way, be prepared for it to get absolutely vaporized, they are both high priority targets for tau. If it is a take all comers sort of scenario, and you may or may not be up against X or Y army...then get the vindicator just to be sure.

Vindicators cannon is only 24 inches, but remember...it's not an ordnance -BARRAGE- weapon. You can move 6 inches and still fire it. Deploy it forward at the beginning if you have first turn, move 6, fire, and you can potentially hit targets in his deployment zone.

Would you be willing to buy them over the internet? Maelstrom offers free international shipping and a 10-17.5% discount over the UK price, which is itself about 33% cheaper than NZ prices at the moment.

Just be careful to check that NZ customs won't tack too many charges onto the price.

A Predator armed right might be the best bet, 2 linked lascannon turret, las cannon sponsoons, pintile mounted hvy bolter, HK missile, x-armor and dozer blade will be a nasty suprize for Toa. Take a dread for support with devistators, I tend to love termi spam but people dont like that.

Vindicators are terrifying and good against everything. Hordes, elite units with high toughness and saves, vehicles, you name it. Whirlwinds are only good against hordes, and their low strength and poor AP makes sure that they're not terribly effective.

Vindicators all the way. I haven't seen anyone use a whirlwind yet. Meanwhile I see vindicators everywhere because they can dish out a S10 large blast that is effective against every model in the game. Whirlwinds not so much. Vindicators are (in my opinion) one of the most versitile tanks in the game. I'm sure others will disagree with me, but they are a necessity in the following mech'd up armies: Chaos (combined with lash prince), Blood Angels, Black Templar. Other armies they're good, but they excel in these armies for the ability to move fast and still fire or have units clumped together to be more effective. If you use any of these three armies, hit up the vindi'. Any other army...well, still use the vindicator. It definitely has its uses.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Gah, So much bad advice.

First off, neither is a great choice against tau.

With the vindi range is an issue, and rail guns will chop through that AV13. The gun is good, though they have easy to shoot at sides (you have to advance, exposing your lower AV)

The whirlwind is awful, hasn't been good since last edition when people ran less tanks, and that is even debatable. Against Fire Warrrors you don't NEED anything special, they are one of the weakest troop choices in the game, fire at them with ANYTHING enough times for force morale, and they will run almost half the time. Crisis suites and broadsides laugh off the hits from these, so there really isn't any point to them at all.

The person recommending preds almost had it right, but then they recommended the TLLC version, with LC sponsons, and more useless wargear than I've EVER seen put onto one model. Extra armor and a dozer blade for a tank that SHOULDN"T EVEN BE MOVING?! What the hell.

The best bang for your buck, both in cash and in points are the autocannon with heavy bolter sponson preditor, or the auto cannon with lascannon sponsons. Both versions are cheap for what you get, one is a transport/elite unit killer, the other is a infantry killer. At 85 or 120 pts, you can't go wrong. Cheap enough that it doesn't have to preform amazing, armed well enough that it could. With its cheap cost and heavy armor, it is also a somewhat effective fire magnet.
