This is my first draft of a 600pt list that needs to be competitive yet look good on the table, for instance veterans are having cloaks and funny helmets!!

HQ
Captain- thunder hammer, storm shield 150pts

Elites
Veterans- rhino 175pts

Troops
5 scouts- missile launcher, camo cloaks 100pts
10 man tactical squad- missile launcher, meltagun 175pts

The captain rides with the veterans, he can take out some vehicles etc and survive, they can abuse their special issue ammunition! The two missile launchers are also for tanks or elite infantry (possibly even characters) and scouts are a cheap choice with bolters so they are more versatile. any constructive criticism would be nice, as it is only a first draft! thanks

If I was you I would change the captain to a librarian with the powers avenger and 1 of your choice (100 pts). The reason for this is while the captain is good for close combat he really isn't very versaltile. I would get rid of the vetreran squad and scouts for 2 tac squads equipped with melta gun, missile launcher, and a combi-melta for sarge (370 pts). 2 razorbacks (or rhinos if you dont have bits for razorback) (80 pts). That brings your points up to 550 I don't know what you have to increase your points but maybe the scout squad to objective camp. So thats a grand total of 650 points this list I think fits what you stated you wanted of your list.

I'm still very new but I play sub 750 point games most of the time.

I take Librarians for low point games. I like to take gate of infinity as one of my powers. It has allowed me to make a last ditch attempt at a control point or to get the Librarian and the unit he is attached to out of trouble if things have gone badly. Makes him and the unit a very mobile force.

I have also found Iron clads with two heavy flamers to be very useful in a drop pod (185pt). I drop them as close to infantry as possible and decimate them (dice gods permitting). You could keep the multimelta on the iron clad if you needed more AT.

Also depending on what I am facing I have had success with scouts with shotguns and one multimelta bomb (and cloaks if I have the points to spare) and use them very aggressively.

*Edit*

Thanks for catching that spelling mistake Scipio Africanus

^Librarians*.

Yeah. Captain is a loss, make him an epistolary if you want the points.

So it seems like I definitely need a librarian? what would you say are the best psychic power combination? You say gate of infinity can help get you out of a nasty spot? Which others do you like?

Depends on what you have but I'm a fan of nullzone and avenger.

I haven't really used nullzone before because I haven't had to deal with any crazy invulnerability saves from my opponents. I like avenger it is always nice to carry what is essentially a heavy flamer (but better) around. I have also used machine curse with some success when I have faced IG with heavy armor, I'm usually hoping for weapon destroyed to pop off their large template gun.

Yes, but I have to remember it is only 600pts, so how many tanks will there be?? And would it be more effective to teleport to capture or contest a vital objective in the last turn??

Definetly drop the thunder hammer on the captain, maybe the storm shield as well. You may want to consider dropping the rhino as well, just to see if you could fit more scouts or weapons on in there.

I've used it for capturing uncontested objectives successfully but I would be careful about using it to contest as you would need to be Deep striking very close to hostile units and could end up having to roll a mishap if you scatter badly, plus all your units are bunched up really close together making then very vulnerable to template weapons. If you can deep strike within 12" of an enemy you could try to drive them off with rapid bolter fire.

I usually find myself up against at least 1 tank. An ork battle waggon with a kill cannon is only ~150 points and it has front armor of 14. I'm just going off my personal experiences.
