I am in the process of making some objective markers for tournament use, but I am not sure how big I can go. I was at a tournament where one player was using resin cast, scale model bolter shells as objective markers. One player commented that with a marker that large, it makes it easier to be within 3" of it to claim it.

My intention is to make one out of the oil drum that came with the 3rd edition box, and I want to put it on a 28mm base, it just looks funny. I'm just concerned that the 40mm base would be considered too large for the marker.

Opinions?

Generally folks measure to the center of the markers when it is an issue. . .but there really is not an issue if you (and your opponent) prefer to measure to any part of it.

Most people make 25mm or 40mm objectives, or else tournaments specify the size.

If there are problems you measure to the centre, then the actual size is irrelevant as Kirsanth says.

Why would a 3/4 Inch marker be too large(the Bolt-shell marker)?

Small base is usually fine, Medium Base should be fine, Marker size really should not matter that much, an entire hill, Ruin, or Building can be an objective(in planetstrike the 6"x6" bastions are invariably and without contest objectives).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

40mm is the most common I see out there. The Adepticon tournaments typically require players to bring 40mm objectives, and I've seen the same at other events.

Resin objectives sold by various terrain makers are usually 40mm, and folks modeling nice-looking objectives usually use 40mm so they have more space to model something cool than a 25mm allows. Bigger than 40mm is less common.

The rules support measuring to a marker, more than to the center of a marker. "A detail of a terrain feature", which is one of the recommended objectives in the mission descriptions, cannot be a geometric point in space. They're using "point" in the military sense- like rendezvous point, rally point, or point of departure. A place where people can gather.

K K - mainly when you only have 3 of them, and you roll a 5 objective mission. If both of you have differing size markers, and you're measuring to the edge and not the centre, size does make a difference

In my limited experience, I have found 40mm base size to be quite acceptable.

Varying size markers between yourself and your opponent makes a trivial difference. You know how big they are before you deploy, anyway.

I bring 5 painted ones to games.
