Taltheria Prime is a Terran and pristine planet bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Holy Terra that once was 40 millennia ago. Under this placid and quiet facade, however, the remains of an ancient apocalyptic struggle from the time of the Dark Age of Technology lay buried and forgotten. It was on this green world on the fringe of the galactic sector that Imperial Explorators, the physical eyes and ears of the Empire, excitedly discovered a diamond in the rough fridges of the Warp. The Imperial Praecipuus Operandi Command (Special Operations Command) unit Fox was entrusted to secure the planet and survey the surface for signs of powerful artifacts from a lost age. Commander "Fighting" Jack Churchill XXXIV's platoons had landed on the surface, escorted by a small armored division, and proceeded to create a foothold on the Taltherian steppes, which bore giant rock formations carved from eons of erosion. It was here on this ancient and quiet world that the drums of war would rage again, for the enigmatic and alien Eldar suddenly emerged from their stealth fields. The notorious Farseer Eldraad issued an ultimatum to the advancing Imperials, who sat poised and ready behind a looming wall of rock; turn back now, or face oblivion. "Your species cannot begin to comprehend what dormant horrors remain on this world, leave this place, and never return (Necrons!)". Jack, never one to disobey the will of the Emperor, chuckled to himself inside the hull of a Vendetta as he signaled his troops to open fire.

IG List: 1 Vendetta, 1 CCS plasma squad, 1 Stormtrooper squad 2 melta, 1 Vet squad w/melta and demolitions doctrine, 1 Vet squad, Platoon (1 PCS, 2 Infantry squads, AC and gl), 3HWT 2 missile 1 mortar, Leman Russ MBT with HB sponsons, Manticore, 2 Armored Sentinels, Guardsman Marbo (Naked Snake) chimera with Heavy bolter/flamer. *FUN FACT*: the models are catachan and the vendetta has been converted to a helicopter

Eldar List: 1 Eldraad, 2 Wraithlords, 1 Ranger Squad, Dire Avenger squad in Wave Serpent, 1 Howling Banshee squad, 1 Falcon, 1 Swooping Hawk squad, 1 Harlequin squad.

Game Type/Deployment: Capture and Control/Spearhead
Objectives: Top of steppe terraces, base of mesa, and small lake

Turn 1: IG- Having an ideal placement with a mesa providing two avenues of fire, the Fox unit gave their answer with the screaming of a Storm Eagle MIRV missile, which vaporized all but one Ranger who held on for dear life for the control of the area. From below a rocky overhang jutting from the mesa, the chimera laden with demolitionists hugged close to the objective, anticipating the charge of the hovering Eldar armor. The massive treads of the Leman Russ tore up the grass behind the footfalls of a squad of veterans charged with its escort. From around the corner of the south end of the mesa, the battle cannon's roar pierced the air and engulfed Eldraad, and the two wraithlords in a cloud of earth, wounding one of the monstrous creatures. From across the stepped plain, Missile Launcher teams prepped and launched their krak missiles with effect, which pounded into an exposed Wraithlord, wounding it. The platoon secured the terraces and was well dug in to receive the Elder siege, capturing an objective.

Eldar- The Falcon hover-tank skimmed over the landscape, an audible hum preceding its approach. With expert precision, the Eldar pilots slashed their brightlances, glowing purple lines cutting through the the turret of the tank, disabling the cannon. Eldraad, recovering from the blast channeled the Warp and rained an eldritch storm over the squad dedicated to the wounded tank, taking the life of one guardsman. The Wave Serpent engaged its Star Engines with a roar and landed behind a large rock formation on the flank of the Imperial forces. The Howling Banshee and Harlequins were required to delay their advance on the superior position of Fox's platoon and devise a viable path to deliver their screaming blades on the enemy without taking heavy losses.

Turn 2: IG- A second salvo of destruction which wounded one of the Wraithlords and shook the crew of the Falcon tank from the Manticore heralded the second phase of Fox's battle-plan as Churchill's Vendetta, Storm Trooper unit, and Sentinel squadron were en route to the firefight to provide much needed support. The mechanized troopers, determined to preserve the flank of their brothers in arms, ushered the Chimera from cover and with all haste sped towards the end of the rock formation, with a sharp slide, the veterans rushed out of the hull just in time to intercept the hovering troop carrier. Dedicated to unit first and foremost, the men were ready to lay down their lives in order to protect their fellow man. Their streams of molten destruction dissipated harmlessly off of the prow of the Serpent, protected by some alien force field. With that, they men charged forward, priming their melta-bomb charges. Despite the speed of the vehicle, several explosives met their mark and for a brief instant, two suns dominated the sky as the earth rocked with the explosion. Neither the Dire Avengers nor the Veteran squad was unscathed, losing a couple good men to shrapnel. At the bottom of the crater, the worse-for-wear Avengers gathered themselves and prepared to unleash their vengeance. Missiles found their mark again as the Heavy Weapons Teams perched at the hilltop rained their payload against the Wraithlord.

Eldar- Enraged at the loss of their transport and a brother warrior, the Dire Avengers lived up to their names, firing an entire fusillade of rounds into the Veterans, tearing many to pieces with needle-sharp projectiles. On the other end of the battlefield, the wraithlords, guided by the words of Eldraad fired their brightlances and rockets at the Leman Russ, but because of superior cover lent by the mesa walls, missed their mark. One Brightlance hurtled its way across the battlefield and struck the Manticore in cover, failing to harm the chassis but shook the crew. The Howling Banshees rushed forward, ready to spill scarlet on the green hills of Taltheria. As the last shot from the Dire Avenger weapons was ushered, the squad then rushed forward to meet the devastated guardsmen and cleaved down the remaining men. They were awarded posthumously for their selfless sacrifice.

Turn 3: IG- The thumping of Helicopter blades echoed against the walls of the rock formations as the Vendetta emerged, Churchill and his squad cheering loudly as they screamed towards the now cornered Eldraad, and disembarked, their Plasma guns glowing menacingly even in the bright sunlight. At that same instant, A valkyrie hovering overhead unleashed its cargo of elite Storm Troopers, who parachuted in with perfect precision near the oasis, where they loosed their burning volleys of las-fire and cut down the last Ranger, causing an upset in the power struggle. Also from the rear of the Eldar forces, lumbered a squad of Lascannon-armed Sentinels, which discharged mighty blasts of energy that dissipated against the unique hull of the falcon, but held enough power to stun the crew. Priming their fierce weapons, Churchill pointed towards the exposed rear of the Falcon and shouted “Bring It Down!” his last syllables drowned out by a hail of plasma which met their mark and triggered a massive explosion from the vehicle. Determined to avenge the deaths of his comrades, the Chimera driver steered to face the doomed Xenos as the hullmounted Heavy Flamer consumed all but one of the Eldar Avengers. Amidst all the chaos, Guardsman Marbo appeared from his hiding place, ready to throw his deadly charge in an attempt to finish off a Wraithlord, but as he primed the charge, shrapnel from the exploding Falcon caught him in surprise and he threw it behind him as he sought cover. It was far from his finest moment.

Eldar- From above the battlefield, the piercing cries of hawks crooned overhead and without warning, several explosions resounded against the hilltop, forcing the Heavy Weapons Teams to cover, but luckily missed their mark. These detonations preceeded the arrival of a squad of Swooping Hawks, which due to hampering fire from the combined arsenal of the platoon, landed in an unfavorable spot, out of cover and directly in view from the hill (rolled mishap, IG got to place unit) where they unleashed their burning hot weaponry into the hillside, killing a missile team. Marbo’s folly prompted the wounded Wraitlord to assail him, with a mighty back-handed swing of its fist, he was flung backwards into the stand of brush that he emerged from, and took time to apply field medicine (a broken arm, dislocated shoulder, and a broken nose) before falling back to command as a casualty. Likewise, the other Wraithlord closed the distance between the Storm Troopers and engaged in a fierce one-sided close encounter. Despite their situation, the unit valiantly kept their ground, despite slowly losing men.

Turn 4: Taking the opportunity of the Sweeping Hawks’ blunder, the Chimera emerged from around the rock face to engulf the entire unit in white-hot promethium, leaving only cinders. The missile teams launched one more salvo with deadly effect on a Wraithlord, whose slender form wavered in the air before collapsing in a burning heap. Commander Churchill’s unit in tandem with the wounded Leman Russ unleashed a salvo directly at the exposed Eldraad, dealing several wounds. The Eldar war effort was crippled by one final salvo from the Manticore. Realizing the fight to be futile, the wounded Farseer called the order to fall back, in which he, and the Banshees teleported in a blink. Amidst the aftermath of the battle, Churchill lit a cigar as he watched his men ascend their standard at the hilltop and mused to the Storm Trooper Captain: “Heh, Warp damn those Eldar, they can be elusive bastards. I don’t know what ‘horrors’ that xeno was babbling about, but whatever it is, the Hammer of the Emperor will put it to sleep permanently.”
The Captain smiled and replied “Hooyah, Commander!”

hey thanks man, glad you enjoyed it. I figure it's more fun to imagine an epic battle than to see minis on a table

It's come to a point where I only have to read an Eldar player's army setup to know the result of a battle. When I read this particular army list my initial reaction was "massacre".

Regardless, even if I did know the Eldar would lose horribly, it was an entertaining read. Good job on the write-up!

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

yeah, my Eldar buddy isn't the most tactically savvy of our group (that'd probably be me =p)
