A friend brought up the following question today and asked that I post it on YMDC:

The spore lists LW and the Ripper Tentacles as weapons. He reasons that during the assault phase, the spore can target units up to 6" away and attack them them with the 6 MC attacks. I mentioned Rippers were a ranged attack and you can't attack a unit in the assault phase unless you charge ang get B2B with a model.

They're a shooting attack. As you said; you can't make close combat attacks unless you're in base contact. Or have a special rule specifically granting you other permission, like the Ork boarding plank.

Specifically, Ripper Tentacles have the profile of a ranged weapon. Therefore they are a ranged weapon, and so are used to shoot. So, as they don't mention anything about it, they don't get the MC benefits and aren't used in any phase other than the shooting phase.

They are, in essence, no different to boltguns. So if he wants to shoot you with them in the assault phase start shooting all your ranged weapons at him during the assault phase and see how he likes it.
