So the other day a friend and I are playing Marines vs. Orks and as he goes to make a shooting roll with a mob of boyz he says that even though only one of his models has line of sight to the unit he's firing on, all of the models in the unit get to fire. I disagreed and said only the one model got to fire, and we ended up having a roll-off to see who was right (he won, not that it mattered as he didn't manage a hit during that roll).

Anyway, my question is who was actually correct? Can all of the models in a unit fire if only a few or even one can see the target, or can only those models with Line of sight fire?

Every model that wants to fire must have LOS to the target unit. Full stop, no room for interpretation on this.

He may have been getting confused with the fact that, even if only one model in the target unit can be seen, all models in the target unit can suffer wounds, an explicit change to 4th ed.

Thanks for the help. I hadn't really thought about what his line of thinking was, but what you guys said makes sense in terms of what he was thinking.

Also I think worth mentioning that the same thing goes for range (unless I'm mistaken). Only models that are in range and have LOS can fire. So if the front half of your unit is in range but the back half is not, only the front half can fire.

These rules are covered on page 16 + 17 of the rulebook

You're correct - only models in LOS and range can fire.
