Hi All,
I'm 2 months to 40k after years as an RPG gamer. Thanks for all the work I've seen and tutorials from the community.
Quick story:
Bought AoBR three months ago and started painting Ultramarines on the tac squad and dreadnought. Found Imperial Fist scheme and fell in love with it.
For the last two months I've been trying to paint Imperial Fist...sigh...terrible luck. Bought the AG Productions How to Paint Imperial Fist which is great but too advanced for my sorry self. Tried lots of online tutorials and had craptastic luck. Then I found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IJrpZDzIuY which is Epic Duck's Quick and Dirty guide...oh my goodness!
Check my Gallery...only pick in there lol!
It was simple...Daemon Yellow Army Painter Primer...base coat Mechrite Red, Bleached Bone, Boltgun MEtal, and Snot Green for the eyes Devlan Mud instead of the Sepia wash...I'm thrilled for tabletop and speed...each marine takes 45 minutes max.
P.S. The arms are coming as are weapons.

From what I can see they are pretty good for a 1st time, better than mine haha.
Word of advice, if you want people to comment then try include a pic in the main thread its easier see rather than hunt to your gallery. Its easy to do, go to picture in question and copy the link under the word "Forums" on the right hand side, copy it into you post and your done.

Looking pretty good so far nice work making them look a bit dirty. For a first timer new to the hobby I'd say I'm impressed as heck.

I tried Imperial Fists when I first started. I wish I had tried the yellow primer you found. I found yellow to be such a hard color to do that I just gave up and made Salamanders instead. Good job, you succeeded where I failed. Really good job for your first minis.

Props for having the cojones to tackle a color as difficult as yellow for your first models. They look pretty great, and that spray seems like a godsend.

Thanks guys for all of the encouragement. I can't say enough good stuff about the Army Painter Daemon Yellow primer for first time, trying to get an army on the table, and really wanting Imperial Fists newbie type. The Epic Duck video was a great tutorial and I can't thank that guy enough.
If anyone heads down this road, I'd recommend NOT batch spraying models. I got in trouble the first time I used the stuff with being WAY too thick even while being exceedingly careful. (I primed a couple of assault marines a buddy let me have and strip...they were caked and then I tried to strip them in non-acetone nail polish remover...they melted :( )
The secret was putting on a latex glove and manually turning the model as I was burst spraying and moving back and forth. You can just see a bit of gray in the recesses, but the genius of Devlan Mud wash is that the model gets dirtied and the recesses get filled. I'll try to add a gallery image of the freshly primed mini vs. the washed mini. The difference is quite substantial.
Again, thanks for all the work this community has done so that a nub like me can get into the hobby without a great deal of fear and trembling.

These are great Imp's! Really impressive for 45 minutes a marine, it takes me like an hour + and they still don't look this good!

Hi Guys,
Here are two pics of the marines. The finished and washed marine vs. the primed and base coated in need of eyes and touch up marines.
While the color isn't a perfect representation of the primer, it's very close to Vallejo Flat Yellow which is used over the mustardy GW foundation yellow for cleaning up my rookie basecoating details. I love this yellow plus the wash. It gives the Fists the muted and battleworn yellow I was looking high and low for...

Your wash is pooling near the feet, which is a little unsightly. Try watering your wash down a tiny bit, or using a wetter brush when applying it. Also, I'd pick out the eyes with Goblin Green if you aren't feeling ballsy enough to paint them as lenses yet. Right now they're very dull. The rest of the mini looks very good though! I'm glad I live in a world where beginners can have a yellow army that looks good.

Hang on the feet/lower legs should look slightly more dirty shouldn't they as they're the parts most likely to get dust/mud/blood/water/other dirty materials on them?

Yes Steve, they should, but if you look at the way the wash pooled it's 'unnatural'.
The dirt, grime, blood, water, mud, whatever wouldn't pool on top of the foot, where there's a crevice between the greaves and sabatons.

Fair point. I think for a first timer (as in this is his first real army) we could be a little less servere but the odvious talent displayed so far may indicate more harsh critisisums are needed for real improvement.
My congrats to the original poster have to be voiced again for finding a colour scheme and technique that works for you.

I'm not seeing any "severe" criticism here Steve. Brother SRM didn't say anything that was cruel or inappropriate. He pointed out a flaw. YakManDoo can fix it in the future, and now he's got a reference to work from.
Frankly the only beef I have is that YakManDoo found such a good primer coat to work from, wish I could find something like that for my DA Successors.

I appologise. On internet chatboards it is impossible to read the little signs that infulence and colour interactions such as body language and volume so there is no tone except the one already in the readers head. I must be in a dark place tonight once again my sincerest appologies..

Honestly guys, I really appreciate the feedback. The internet allows for tone to be completely misinterpreted. I am neither offended nor dissuaded.
Thanks to your feedback I've pulled some of the excess wash off the last couple of minis and it definitely lightened the pooling.
Unfortunately I over compensated and lightened the yellow a little too much. I'm loving the lighter mustard shade.
I also brightened the lenses, but wow those little eyes are stressful.
Thanks all. I'm planning on getting a squad pic once it's all done.

Those look fantastic, I am in the process of painting my first SM army ( well my sons technically) and after watching the Ultramarine film we really wanted to go Imperial Fists (as Blue dudes just wasn't an option) but I just couldnt get the yellow to look right so we decided on a Red coloured chapter ...... really wish I had held out and looked for that primer your using now . Seriously my friend as a first paintjob you should be well proud I know I would be.
