I finished up a High Elf army and am looking at picking up a second army to supplement and to lend to friends who want to get into WHFB. I love the look of Lizardmen (Stegadons!) and the low model count + solid battalion means that its not too expensive to start up. My only concern is that Lizards and High Elves will play too similarly on the table. Each army runs expensive foot soldiers, light shooting, and dominant magic. Does the big difference between the two (lizards are tough, elves are fast) really translate to different play on the table?

The armies are quite different. LM have more shooting, heavier hitting and surviving infantry, as well as large monsters, some of the best flyers, and a beefy deathstar unit in a slann with TG.

Add to that the razordon and salamander and you have many different options that HE don't have.

There are only a few really good builds for HE, but with LM there are many many ways you can go with building a list.

Having played both I can say that, in theory, the two armies are very similar. In practice, however, they are quite different. Going from always strike first with re-rolls to almost always striking last with no re-rolls is a big difference....but so is having T4 4+AS saurus with 2 attacks each. The Slann edges High Mages (with the exception of Teclis...blah) slightly in terms of potential magical output. Plus he's A LOT tougher to take down (particularly in a TG bunker. Though there's some debate on whether these are still viable anymore. personally I like them). If you do go Dinomen I'd recommend taking Lore of Light as it will greatly offset your (very few) weaknesses (namely int and WS). Life is very popular as well. (T8 Saurus LOLOLOLOLOL).

If you are looking to go something that is vastly different from HE I would recommend trying TK, Brets, or Skaven.

2500-Skaven
2500-Space Wolves

The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.
