Ok, can't really expect the 40K Dakkaites to get excited about this release, so let's have a discussion thread about the upcoming Fantasy Planetstrike... ahem, Storm of Magic

A brief summary of what we know so far...

New Models

Cockatrice, Manticore, Chimera, Black Dragon

Chaos Sorcerer, Tzeentch Chaos Sorcerer, Dark Elf Sorceress, Necromancer

New Scenery

Balewind Vortex, Dreadfire Portal, Eternity Stair & Magewrath Throne

New Rules - with a of acknowledgement to Bramgaunt on Warseer

When you place terrain, you deploy Magical Focus points. Think of these as landmarks inhibited with strong magics, like towers, magical stairs, Columns of Fire, or what ever. Each army starts with a designated number of Focus points, it depends of the scale of the game. 1 per army per 1000 points is, what I was told, suggested in the book.

You may place 1 Wizard including a mount on top of the Focus point, and one guarding unit within a limited space - enough to place about 30 standard base-sized miniatures, I was told. The rest of your army is deployed as usual.

The game is all about dominating these points, which grant bonuses to your wizard while he stands atop of them. The Magic Phase is strongly buffed with 4D6 Power dice. In addition, you determine the ascending wind of magic at the beginning of each magic phase. (It's done randomly by some sort of tool, don't ask me what it is, I don't know, but apperantly it's not a dice.) Army book Lores are associated with Army book rules, for example if the Lore of Light is the Ascendand Lore this turn, High Magic is Ascended aswell (I don't know if High Lore is really associated with Lore of Light - it's simply a example of my understanding of the mechanics).

The Ascended magic gains a +4 bonus on attempts to cast their spells. You cannot change the Ascendend in any way, though it's determined new in every magic phase.

There are also new Cataclysm spells and Ancestor Runes (for dwarfs) which apparently give you the possibility to summon Monsters like the Cockatrice and cause magical mayhem

My take is that whilst I'm pleased that Warhammer is getting a supplement, I'm not so sure I'll be playing it much. My games are quite low key and I tend to scale down the impact of magic as it is. The thought of magic vortexes spiralling across the battlefield left, right and centre with monsters popping up at random makes me wonder exactly how tactical a Storm of Magic battle will be and how much will just come down to luck. I'm also not ready to make the investment required which I suspect will be something along the lines of rulebook = £30 + 2 monsters = £70 = a grand total of £100++ (I can make my own focus points).

I'm kind of in the excited about more models and less excited about more powerful, more random magic.

I wish that they had done a more level release, as from the other thread it appears that most of the non-monster models are either WoC or Dark Elves (neither of which am I currently collecting).

Does anyone know if the Storm of Chaos is only for the BRB lores or possibly for other army book lores?

Either way, I am always glad for WFB releases

WFB armies: Wood elves, Bretonnia, Daemons of Chaos (Tzeentch), Dwarfs & Orcs 'n Goblins
40K armies: Black Legion, Necrons, & Craftworld Iyanden

I'm glad they tried something different, though crazy magic isn't really my cup of tea. Terrain and new sorcerers look pretty sweet, though, and many of the monsters are cool, too.

Still kinda wish they'd gone back to the Siege well, though...

Looks cool, not sure about the Ancestor Runes though.

The majority of the terrain is over the top and full of skulls imo. Love the new DE models and will end up buying all the monsters just to paint. The DE dragon is definitely ending up in my wife's army.

As for the rules, if I wanted stronger magic I could just house rule it so nothing big for me there. I'll prolly buy the book just for the pictures.
