Hello everyone, i am new to the 'Dakka Dakka" world but i am starting fantasy and would like some advice.
i know next to nothing about fantasy yet but i was thinking a primarily cav army with fire support and a corps of greatswords. Mainly i need help choosing a paint scheme....what province is mainly cavalry oriented? so any suggestions would be cool. Thanks

Averland(black and yellow) is the "horse" province as they have the best horses in the Empire.

That being said, knightly orders have their own paint schemes so you can design and pick any scheme you like really.

Knights Griffon or Knights of the Blazing Sunwould look best in an Averland army as they are black and gold.

Ok cool thanks! But like i need advice on what models to collect and/or what style of army to run whether its primarily cav etc. So far i have "empire hero with gory sword" and "empire captain with hammer and pistol"

Have you considered Bretonnia? They might be up your alley (better knights).

I agree that if you are bent on a cavalry heavy army that Bretonnians are the way to go. That being said, you could easily use the Bretonnian army book with the Empire cavalry models as long as you let your opponents know ahead of time that they are fighting Brets and not Empire.

Personally all cav is not ideal for Empire, as they rely more on their variety. Most Empire armies feature units of 5 knights with just a musician as flanking units to support infantry.

As for what to collect, I'd say 2 cannons, 2 mortars, 1 Hellfire magnetized to be a rocket battery if needed, then flesh out with a unit of greatswords, a unit of swordsmen, and a unit of halberdiers.

Once you have all that then it's just a matter of making room for things like handgunners and extra characters.

Not sure what the price break is after the increase, but it is probably still worth it to check out the battalion box.

20 State Troops
10 Handgunners/Xbows
10 Greatswords
8 Knights

I actually started with two of these. Then, as aerethan says, a couple of the cannon/mortar boxes (you can get bits on ebay that will let you make 3 complete guns from 2 boxes) and the convertible helblaster/helstorm. The mage box and the general box are also nice kits. Add other lords/heroes as needed and, of course, you can never have enough state troops

alright cool thanks! Yeah i would like a warrior priest leader as well as battle mages. Seeing as how you said cav isn't the best....what about greatswords, halberdiers, with a ton of archer, handgunner, and mortar suppport with outriders + knights to flank?

I would personally recommend you increase the size of your state troops. With hordes being so prevalent now a days your small units with get smashed apart.

For a total cost of 409 pts you get 32 S4 attacks that will hit most enemies on 4's with hatred. That is a dirt cheap unit. In 2k games i have 2 of these blocks and a block or greatswords to run up the middle. State troops are best in blocks of 50.

Bigger units are key in fantasy games now. So bulk up your units. It will help a ton. Also try to get your hands on some of the previous edition halberdiers. They actually rank up.

a 1500 point game would be considered a small game.

I'd say 2500 points is the normal "full" sized game right now.

At my FLGS i rarely play games less than 3k. The average game takes us around 2 hours to play. When i choose to play games that are less they usually run anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes.

But it seems that the average is the 2750-4000 range.
