I bought myself a heap of Necrons for my birthday, with an eye towards working on the army when I'm ready to take a break from my Imperial Guard. Realistically, I probably won't have them on the table before the new Necron 'dex drops, but for the heck of it I cobbled together a list. It's probably a really bad list. There are no Monoliths. But here goes. Does this list have any realistic chance of putting up a fight, or is it basically just a source of welfare wins for my opponents?

HQ

Necron Lord 140pts
w/ Resurrection Orb

Necron Lord 180pts
w/ Warscythe, Resurrection Orb and Destroyer Body

TROOPS (Choices? Choices are for people who aren't pissed off undead robots! )

11 Necron Warriors 198pts

11 Necron Warriors 198pts

11 Necron Warriors 198pts

11 Necron Warriors 198pts

FAST ATTACK

3 Destroyers 150pts

3 Destroyers 150pts

HEAVY SUPPORT (Dude, where's the Monolith?)

3 Tomb Spyders 165pts
w/ 2 Particle Projectors

3 Tomb Spyders 165pts
w/ 2 Particle Projectors

Point(les)s: 1,747

I have a very limited grasp of Necron tactics, and I'm sure that's very apparent from my unit lo...oh wait, Necrons don't have unit load outs! From what I've read/heard, the dominant Necron builds right now run three Monoliths and/or lots of Wraiths. Personally, I want to see what six mini-Monstrous Creatures can do for me (expectations...low! Urge to Shatner...rising!). The Destroyers are there to snipe at transports and light vehicles.

Always always always, take units will WBB in pairs. In your list as soon as the destroyers or wraiths go down they are down for good.

Take either wraiths or destroyers. Then take 2 identical units or better yet 3 that way they at least have a shot to get back up.

So my Necron Battleforces, Tomb Spyders and the parts that I'm using to build a Destroyer Lord arrived by post today, and now I'm even more seriously considering putting this list on the table soon. Hopefully the Destroyer Lord and Spyders will give me enough of an anti-tank option...

Well, you're just 250pts from a 2k game, Heavy Destroyers are amazing anti-tank units, I'd go for one of those (at least) at this large a game.

Yeah? I figured that Heavy Destroyers would attract too much hate for their own good. I'll give it a go. Though at 2k, I may some points around for a Monolith. Y'know, just so I can be like the cool kids.

Heavy Destroyers go down so easy because they attract so much fire and come in small squad sizes. This coupled with their points cost makes them poor choices.

I would take more regular destroyers over heavies any day.

Heavy Destroyers are not "amazing anti-tank units". They are a single shot lascannon that will get killed ASAP. Bringing 1 is almost pointless, specially if you don't go first.

Bring the minimum amount of warriors possible (2x10). Reserve them. Hope they come in as late in the game as possible.

You only need 2 tomb spyders, and probably only 1, with this list. Tomb Spyders, despite being MC's, are really just a support unit. Poop out a scarab to create a majority toughness 6 unit, and hang them back within 12" of your destroyers so they can WBB when they get wiped.

With less warriors, you can bring more destroyres. Bring as many as possible.

Less warriors means an easy Phase out. I would suggest a monolith so you can teleport your warriors and reroll the wbb or to use its whip to anti-tank

Well it's not like you'll send that 1 Heavy Destroyer on its own towards the enemy armor. But yeah, with that core a Monolith may be better.

And as mentioned, lowering your numbers will make the phase out a larger problem, personally I prefer having a full unit of 20 Necron Warriors, just for the large amount of firepower and intemidation that brings, it's nothing one attacks without bringing in as much as they can. Tactically it may, however, be better to keep them split to smaller units, it's just a personal preference of mine.

With a 2k point game i play the following necron list

HQ
Lord with orb and veil

Elite
10x immortals

troops
10x warrior
10x warrior

Fast
10x scarabs with Disruption field (left in reserves most of the time when deployed sent right for the biggest means vehicle they got)
4x destroyers
4x destroyers

Heavy
Monolith
Monolith
2x Tomb Spyder

i form a gun line using the monoliths to cover my flanks, keeping the destroyers out front to attack anything on the map but not to far away so they cant be helped by the monolith or the tomb spyder. and then you just let the come to you, using the veil to hit their rear with the lord and immortal group. or using the lord to get some warriors to a lonely forgotten point on the far end of the map to get a quick cap point victory. as far as i see it, till the come out with a new codex, necrons are best when you jump them around using the monolith tp ability to yank your troops out of cc leaving their troops in a nice tight ball for the other monolith to shoot at or using the lords veil to drop the right group on their flanks.
