im currently assembling some grey knights, i need some advice on baseing them because on my last army i based all to look like they were scaleing a mountain and they all looked like generals and you couldnt tell them apart so i wanted to know if i should base my HQ or all my infantry?

I think you should base all of your models. I think it looks better. To tell them apart, you could use squad markings. IIRC for Space Marines, the symbol for the troop type (e.g. Troop, Fast Attack, Elite) goes on the right shoulder and the personal heraldry or squad number goes on the left shoulder. You could also make up your own symbols or conventions. For my IG, I paint the military rank on their right shoulder and Regiment:Squad:Company marking on the left shoulder.

As celtic said, base them all. Try to use somewhat of a common theme for them though to tie your army together and make it look like a cohesive unit though, such as all predominately grass, urban, desert, snow or w/e. You don't want one unit looking like it's crossing a frozen tundra and another on sand bases. One thing I do is try to do more elaborate bases for my HQ choices or more important models, since it makes them stand out a bit more.

What colour are you using for the primary coating of your Knights and what are you using for basing?

You could try painting distinct black lines along the edges of the boots to show the separation.

Cities can have a reddish look, especially ones that uses bricks. Tr painting them with a bit of red. City mud can be brown and will not look out of place. Basically use a warm color for the bases, but don't go overboard. You just want your models to stand out more.

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.
