Hey All,

Am trying to go for an assault oriented list. I have been doing the shooty marines for a bit now and want to try the exact opposite direction. Here is what I have so far:

HQ: Captain Darnath Lysander (1#, 200 pts)
1 Captain Darnath Lysander,

HQ: Shadow Captain Kayvaan Shrike (1#, 195 pts)
1 Shadow Captain Kayvaan Shrike,

Troops: Tactical Squad (6#, 190 pts)
4 Tactical Squad,
1 Sergeant,
1 Razorback

Troops: Tactical Squad (6#, 190 pts)
4 Tactical Squad
1 Sergeant, 4
1 Razorback,

Troops: Scout Squad (5#, 100 pts)
4 Scout Squad, + Missile Launcher + Sergeant
1 Sergeant,= ( Camo Cloaks )

Elite: Terminator Assault Squad (6#, 460 pts)
4 Terminator Assault Squad
1 Sergeant,
1 Land Raider Crusader, = ( Multi-Melta )

Elite: Terminator Squad (6#, 465 pts)
4 Terminator Squad, + Heavy Flamer
1 Sergeant,
1 Land Raider Crusader = (Multi-Melta )

Heavy Support: Devastator Squad (10#, 250 pts)
9 Devastator Squad, 227 pts = Missile Launcher x2 + Plasma Cannon x2 5+ Sergeant
1 Sergeant,

Fast Attack: Assault Squad (10#, 225 pts)
9 Assault Squad, s = Flamer
1 Sergeant = ( + Combat Shield + Melta Bombs ) + Power Weapon x1

Fast Attack: Assault Squad (10#, 225 pts)
9 Assault Squad, s = Flamer
1 Sergeant = ( + Combat Shield + Melta Bombs ) + Power Weapon x1

I will be using Shrikes Fleet rule instead of Lysanders stubborn rule, just to be able to have fleet terminators. My thoughts are that my RB and snipers hang back and shoot stuff and sit on an objective. The rest of my army relentlessly moves forward to get into assault. Thats about it.

I know that I could probably use another scoring unit, but 3 seems to be enough for most games since I am more or less going for killing my opponent off of objectives.

Thoughts?

Cheers,

I think you'd be hard pressed against a good Shooty Army, particular IG, where the sheer volume and quantity of shots will eventually overwhelm you.

I'd avoid taking those TL Lascannons on your Razorbacks. For 35 points each, you can add them together and make almost an entire other unit of something else. I would stick with the TL Heavy Bolters instead. They're far more reliable at taking enemy Infantry on objectives, IMHO.

As for the Terminators, I'd switch to Assault Terminators instead. With Lysander's TH, you'd probably benefit more from taking 5 LC Terminators the most. Also, if you don't intend on putting more than 6 Terminators in a Land Raider, go with the Redeemer instead. It's 10 points cheaper, and it's weapons are far more efficient than the Crusaders. Find the extra points for Extra Armor, and possibly a MM as well.

As for the Tactical Squads, if you're going to use the base 5 man squad, you're better off taking the full 10 man team and just Combat Squading, which will save you more points as well. Have the Heavy Weapon carrier sit back and shoot, and the Razorback with the Sgt and Flamer push forward. It doesn't change your tactics much, and now you have a Scoring unit that's camping on an objective on your side of the table, while another can go grab an objective that's anywhere else. If you need more points to accomplish this, then ditch the Scout Squad completely. Scouts are good, but in my opinion you need to have the right synergies for them, and without changing your list drastically, I don't think they fit.

On the Devastator Squad, downgrade the Plasma Cannons to Missile Launchers. If you insist on needing Plasma Cannons, take them on the Tactical Combat Squads instead. You'll save 5 more points in the end that way (25 Points/Plasma Cannon (on Devastator) - 15 Points/Missile Launcher (on Devastator) - 5 Points/Plasma Cannon (On Tact Squad) = 5 points saved.

Assault Squads are good, but I'd put the 2nd Flamer or a Plasma Pistol in there too. If you're allowed access up to a certain amount of Special Weapons, you should always take as much advantage of it as possible. With the amount of points you'd save from other places, this shouldn't be hard to accomplish.

As for what you can add, I know you're trying to keep it "Assaulty" but I think you need better Anti-Tank Support. A squad of Sternguard Vet's with Combi-Melta's would help this list a lot. Now you'll be able to open up vehicles carrying troops for your Assault Marines and Terminators to go after.

Good luck!

This list is kinda weak. You have a major uphill battle if you want to run an assault oriented list out of the vanilla Marine codex. Right now, you have a general mishmash of units that don't support each other well enough.

I can see two reasonable ways forward:

1. Max out on Terminators (3 Squads), and use the rest of the list to support them as a fire base. Keep the Tac Squads shooty, and bump them up to 10 men so you can take useful weapons. Don't bother with the Power Fists, they'll suck at CC either way. Cut the Assault Marines and Devastators too, as they are both really weak choices in the vanilla codex. Lysander probably needs to go too, since you're already taking Shrike.

2. Shift to playing Blood Angels. It's a much better way to do a CC oriented Marine army. You get Assault Marines as Troops, non-worthless Vanguard Veterans, and the ability to give your squads Furious Charge and Feel No Pain. I'd be happy to give you suggestions if you're open to the idea.

I'm pretty sure you can't post specific point's values like that.

@Ruroini - Thanks for the suggestions. I am looking into making some of those changes, and trying to find points to do it.

@MrEconomics - I considered playing blood angels, and may yet switch to them as my assault army.

@SickSix - Why would I not be allowed to post the point values of units in the list? Seems like a weird rule to have

Thanks for the comments guys. I appreciate it.
