So this auction is labelled "hive guard", but those aren't the current hive guard models. Are they previous editions? Or just some random models that this guy is trying to pass off as hive guard? Any help is appreciated.

I'm not 100% sure, but those look like they would be older Hive Guard models.

Those are definitely the old Hive Guard models.

Would these old ones still be legal? Not for tournament play, but are they based the same and all?

They're on 40mm bases, and they're armed with big shields and lash whips. GW models are always legal, so you could use them in even a GW sponsored tournament. You could just field them as Hive Guard with lash whips.

Yep old model hive gaurds, have a few myself. Maybe Im old fashioned but I liek the older models better with a few exceptions. Old carnifex was pretty unimaginative. I liek the old hive tyrant too which I have but Im just a sucker for metal. Never liekd plastic taht much

In case there's any confusion, find-and-replace "hive" with "tyrant" for this this thread.

Yeah, they're Tyrant Guard, not Hive Guard.

Hive Guard didn't exist until the current codex.

Sorry to hijack the thread a little here but:

Would there be any reason that OOP Necron models would be illegal? (Warriors/Immortals/Destroyers/Scarabs)

The only real issue with old Necrons is with the scarabs... they were originally either unbased, or based a single scarab to a 25mm base.

If you swarm them up on a 40mm base like the current scarabs like this:

...they do just fine.

Yeah I've been pondering the best way to base them.

I've been looking at 'posing' them in a ripper-esque pose as if they are spilling out of a tomb in droves and scrabbling over each other.

Thanks for the answer! and sorry again to hijack the thread!

OOP models are all perfectly legal. My Marine army is largely made up of models from the 80s and early 90s. Just means you need to do the occasional bit of creative counts-as.

Tyrant Guard in that eBay auction, not Hive Guard.

Yes, they've be legal, but they wouldn't be a good representation for Hive Guard, as they don't have guns.

The confusion (mine included) is that many of us don't play Tyranids and we see Hive Guard more often than Tyrant Guard.

Same. I'm pretty familiar with Tyranids, and some one mentioned counting them as having lashwhip/bonesword, yet I knew hive guard couldn't get them. Thanks for straightening that out Mannahnin.
