It occured to me the other day that a dread is technically a vehicle. So is it possible for a dread to fire, even if it is combat? I don't have the rulebook handy so I can't look up the rules for walkers.

Walkers fight like infantry in close combat, so no.

But don't forget that they are vehicles for shooting purposes, so they are not prevented from firing by weapon restrictions, but only by vehicle movement restrictions.

Not all vehicle restrictions. You can move your six inches and still fire all available weaponry. Movement wise they react exactly like vehicles with dangerous terrain tests.

Oh whoops.

Well, OP, the best thing to do is just figure out whether the situation would more accurately apply to a vehicle (as in penetrating armour) or infantry (as in dealing with terrain and assaults). If in doubt, just go with your best interpretation...

Walkers are a mission, my favourite opponent always fields 2 and wants to add another. And he doesn't know his rules that well...

Your best interpretation is not at all necessary; the Walker rules spell out, very clearly, which parts are vehicle-like, and which are Infantry-like, and it gives you a few walker-specific rules. Said rules are on Pages 72 and 73 of the BRB.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

More specifically, vehicle shooting rules apply to walkers, because they are vehicles (no 'technically' about it). The vehicle shooting rules are broken down for specific vehicle types. Apply the rules that address Walkers.

Insaniak and Kel have made my answers superfluous, but I would like to ad my endorsement to their finely-written words.
