I'm trying to paint three Rhinos for my grey knight army but I keep failing miserably on painting them with metallics without getting hardcore brush strokes. No amount of watering the paint down, different brushes, or whatever can get even a close finish that has an even coat that doesn't look weird, have brush strokes, or look uneven. I can paint the reds just fine and they look really good, but the metallics just come really short.

Is that just what you have to deal with whenever you don't have an airbrush?

Army Painter makes a good Chainmail primer if you're looking for that color. I'm using it on my Grey Knights and I'm liking it so far.

Use a lighter mixture with added water. The extra liquid will help the colour spread more evenly. Only do sections, though, so you can monitor your efforts more closely and rectify any denser patches.
It's more time consuming but the finish should be nice.

Are you trying to do it in one coat? Somewhat thinned paint with 2 or more coats will come out far better. Here's my Vindicator that was just a few coats of Boltgun Metal:
