I was curious to if a varghulf was considered a character. It states in the rulebook in the lone characters section that "...characters are permitted to move around the battlefield as individuals, fighting a solitary battle against the foe...."
From what I can interpret out of the characters section they should be. But I don't think they technically are for some reason. What do you guys think. I doubt they are but by definition I think they should be. It is a pretty important discrepancy considering if they are characters and they are technically a vampire then they should be able to cast invok and have characted directed spells cast on them.
Thanks

Technically, no.
It'd be similar to a giant being a character.

I mean technically no why though? I guess it's just one of those things I understand but don't understand why? It fits the profile and there is nothing really saying why he wouldn't be a character.

No, they are not characters. They are vamps, but they aren't characters for the same reason that an Ogre maneater isn't character. The Vargulf is a vamp that has no real control over themselves and are just there for the sake of killing, so it's not a creature that's capable of actually leading or even tapping into magical powers.

Simple reason: it's place in the army book. It's listed as a rare UNIT not as a hero or lord. It's the same as any other monster.
The only thing special about it is the Vampire rule which doesn't make it a character, just as Blood Knights are not characters for the sake of composition.

Fist full - you are making a common logical fallacy, thats why
Just because characters are lone models that move around the battlefield by themselves does NOT mean that any model that moves around the battlefield by itself is ipso facto a character.
A implies B does NOT mean that B implies A

characters can join units, vargulfs cant.
only lords and heroes, and anything else with an explicit special rule stating such are characters. unit champions count as characters for the purposes of challenges but they are not characters.
