Following the success of my Laelaps Assault Bike, I wanted to start work on another light vehicle designed to support infantry advances.

There are often times when calling in armour is either impractical or deemed unnecessary. But what happens when your men come under air attack, or are in need of some heavy firepower to break the enemy lines? You call in the Hydrette Infantry Support Vehicle. A simple, mobile, weapons platform, the Hydrette is an effective way to support an infantry platoon with the awesome power of quad autocannons.

I had initially planned to use the Ork Wartrak as the base for the Hydrette, with the weapons platform from the Aegis Defence Line mounted on the back. However, I fell foul of online ordering, and instead of a Wartrak, I ended up with one of the old Wartrukks (The old flatbed open-topped ones). Rather than send it back though, I decided that the God Emperor was smiling down on me, and that the Trukk would probably work better. So I have my components, and it's time to build me a Hydrette!

The first step was to remove the small side walls of the wartrukk's cargo section, giving me a flat platform to mount the autocannons on. I then added the base for the hydra - perfect fit!

I then assembled the autocannons and placed them onto the truck to get an idea of how it's looking. It was at this point that I realised just how high the base platform makes the Hydra...

I don't know about you guys, but I think it does look a bit ridic. So I took to the hob to disassemble the base, and tried a new configuration:

I think this looks far better now, but I still get the feeling that something is missing from it =/

Looks really cool so far. I can't wait to see this peice all painted. Just a tip: you might want to add highlights to the edges of the armor to add a bit of realism and depth.

Thanks 40k Ninja, yeah, I'm getting a bit excited about it too. Starting to think about what I'm going to do re crew.

Yeah, that paint job is farrrrr from finished. I tend to throw on the basecoat before I start assembling, just to ensure that I get the red/black balance and distribution right. The next step will be to give it a wash and then highlight with Blood Red.

Looks far better without the base block that turned it from meh to reasonable and I hpe you continue Iperialing it up.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.
