What's the deal with the different bracket styles?

Because at the top of Dakka messages, you've got square bracket templates [], but if I type in random html tags (which I often do absent-mindedly) with <> brackets, they work too....

Is there any difference? Or do some tags not work when written on Dakka in html vibes?

people are used to one or the other, so both are supported depending on what you are more comfortable with.
