I know this is a basic rule, but my friend and i are really just starting to get the rules figured out, but for assaults, can you move 6 inches in the movement phase and still assault 6? or is it a total of 6 inches for the both of em? cause rapid fire on a bolter at 12 inches is kinda pointless against armies like tyranids right?

It depends, I'd rather rapid fire his Genestealers than assault them. That said though ( some units move 6" others move 12"; if you have done nothing to prevent an assault you may than move up to your assault distance ie; Space marine Tac Squad may move 6" fire bolt pistols, than assault 6". However a Thunder Wolf Calvary may move 6" and assault up to 12"

Thank you very much, i wasn't sure if for regular infantry 12' is assault range. but that clarified for me thank you. out of curiosity how would one "prevent an assault"?

Running (unless you have fleet), firing rapid fire or firing heavy weapons (the two latter apply if you're not Relentless) prevents you from charging.

Ahh ok, the way i read the first answer was you could prevent the enemies assault.

Point of order: you don't rapid fire a bolter, you don't assault a storm bolter or Heavy a lascannon either.

Rapid fire is the weapon type, not a mode of fire.

shooting two shots at 12" or less is what my friends and I call "Double Tap"

It avoids confusion if you use the proper terminology, especially in the YMDC forum.
