Hey guys!

I want to share some pictures of my Baron Sathonyx. I knew that I wanted to convert a model for the Baron because his rules are great and he's so cheap, but I don't really like how the Baron is portrayed in the codex so I knew I wanted to do something different. Browsing google images a while ago, I saw a Baron that had a Raider sail sticking out of the skyboard, and he was hanging on to the sail with a chain like he was windsurfing. I loved the concept and knew I wanted to use it, but the two windsurfing Barons I saw were missing something; when I found out what they were missing, I was struck with inspiration and started building.

When I was thinking about windsurf sails, I remembered that the rider doesn't hang on to the sail itself, he hangs onto a curved bar that wraps around the sail. I thought about what I might use for this bar, and when I looked at one of my Raiders, I saw exactly the piece I needed. And thankfully, the Ravager kit comes with a replacement piece for it, and I have two Ravagers, so I had my sail! I didn't want to use a regular skyboard because it looked too small under the Raider sail, so I started building a custom board out of Reaver parts. I also knew I wanted to use a face plate head because all my Hellions have face plates. The rest followed quite easily from the concept, and here's what I ended up with!

He's deadly, flashy, and rides into battle in unnecessary extravagance! A classic denizen of the 41st millennium. The model has all the wargear that the baron has (e.g. Splinter pistol and Phantasm grenade launcher); plus, unlike most Baron conversions, my Baron's skyboard actually looks like it gives him +2 str on the charge! The board is made from two Reaver hulls and the seat/engine of a Reaver. The chains and the blade in the back are from the Raider kit. The sail is from the Raider kit, and the two curved bars on the sail were leftover from Ravager kits. The Phantasm grenade launcher--which is split up and placed where the Reaver pop-up screens would go--is from the Hellions kit. The Splinter pod--which is inside the board and shoots out the front--is made from two leftover Reaver Splinter rifles. The Baron himself has Hellion legs, a Kabalite Warrior chest, Hellion arms, a Reaver head, and some hanging skulls and a Splinter pistol which were from my DE bitz box and I think are from the Hellion kit.

If you like it, please head over to http://miniaturewargameconversions.blogspot.com/ and vote for me in the conversion contest! I'm entry #17. Some of the other conversions are really sweet too, so definitely check it out. And feel free to use and expand on my concept, because that's exactly what I did to someone else's Baron!

Peace and love! (Here in the 3rd millenium, that is )

Jeff

Beautiful. That's a really clever take on the Baron, and on Hellions in general. Frankly, I think it looks much cooler than any of the stock hellions. Much more dynamic and badass.

So, here he is!

And for a little context, here he is with the rest of the Dark Eldar that I've painted in the last two weeks.

My paint scheme was inspired by an awesome battle table that GW had on their website during the storm of magic release; it was dark purple with big ice blue crystals sticking out. The armor is a mix of about 5:1 Lyche Purple and Chaos black, with highlights of Lyche Purple and then Warlock Purple. The hair and the sail start with Necron Abyss, then Enchanted Blue, then Ice Blue. Metal is Boltgun Metal. Skin is Dheneb stone with a Devlan Mud wash.

I'm not done, I haven't washed anything but the skin yet. Eventually I'll draw some Ice Blue designs on his board and on his face plate; I just haven't decided what sort of free hand patterns I want to draw on my Raiders and such, so I'll hold off.

I've realized a few parts of my Dark Eldar paint scheme that I'm struggling with, so hopefully you guys can give me some tips. I'm really bad at highlighting the bodysuits, the leather-ish skin tight suit that all the Dark Eldar have under their armor. All I do is splash some Codex Grey highlights on and hope that they end up in a place that looks alright. Any tips for how to make the black clothing look better?

Next I'm gonna paint the 5 Hellions that I've assembled, so the Baron isn't so lonely any more. I'll put them up when I do. I really appreciate all the feedback, I'm quite proud of my Baron and I'm glad you all like him too!
