Ok, so there's been thousands of these posts over the years, and in some I've helped others to decide what to do next.
But now it's my turn to be stuck.

Here's the shortlist:
Eldar foot list, led by avatar and with at least one wraithlord
Nid list, lots of big monsters
SM list, salamanders with lots of TH/SS termies
CSM list, lots of khorne bezerkers

I'm going for something assaulty as you may have guessed. They're listed in order of preference, however I'm not sure how well the first or last ones would work.

Are you trying to be competitive?

It would be good if I was, but my main goal is to get an army that I enjoy playing with.

Footdar can do okay, but honestly they're better off in transports. They're very fragile, and generally very short ranged. You probably won't get in range of most of your targets if you're on foot, unless those same targets want to assault you. Also, warwalkers with scatterlasers are incredibly important to Footdar, since they need the fire support. This unfortunately takes up the same slot as Wraithlords in the FOC.

Nids with lots of big monsters can do alright depending on the big monsters. If they're Trygons and Tervigons, yeah, you can do well. Carnifexes are unfortunately a bit too expensive for what they do.

Salamanders Space Marines can do just fine. Also consider taking Sternguard with lots of combi-meltas/flamers and sticking them in drop pods, then combat squadding when they hit the ground to shoot at two targets.

CSM with lots of Khorne Berserkers works alright. They need to be in rhinos and land raiders though, since you'll never charge anything if you're dicking around on foot all game. What would you take for support? Vindicators are awesome close support, while havocs with autocannons or defilers would be decent ranged support.

Hope some of that helps! Also, consider which figures you'd like to paint most. If you don't like the models, you won't like playing the army!

Thanks. I'll probably end up going for the Salamanders, though I may go for the CSM or Nids, or possibly eldar.

So, decided then?

One suggestion that doesn't always come up in these threads is to buy a troop choice from each, or a couple, and see how much you like painting and modelling these armies. It won't get you an entire new army, but it will reduce the chances you invest in a lot of models you can't stand. Plus, if you genuiniely like these armies you have somewhere to start should you move on again in the future.

Also, the MC TH are not the really important thing with Vulkan. Cool yes, but not the most important thing.
The main draw is flamers and meltas. Rerolling-to-hit meltas and rerolling-to-wound flamers can be helpful and deadly.

If you want, I can send you a 1500 point list that I came up with while I was thinking of doing Salamanders.
Just send me a message if you want it.
