Anyone actually play this game? Tve pretty much persuaded myself that Im buying a new PC with my tax spending cash, and so my brother and I have been discussing what MMO we should jump into. His friend is a huge fan of Rift and says its just way better then WoW. I does look good, and it looks pretty gritty, and Id either be a healing type (my fav class in raids/dungeons) or a mage type (2nd fav) but Im curious how it is? Ive seenaa few vids on it, but most vids are like 30 minutes to an hour long, and it doesnt really SHOW if the game is actually worth playing or not.

Experiences? And be brutally honest as well.

Wait for some of the (would be) innovating MMO's coming out. Or at least.. different ones.

End of Nations
Planetside 2

As for Riften, I played the BETA for a week and wasn't impressed. It felt just like WoW, with some different gimmicks.

Rifts is a solid game with nice graphics, but it isn't changing the paradigm. Had a lot of fun with it when I played it, and like being able to switch roles with the same character on the fly.

Rift was a lot like WOW, but not as much polish. I played it about a month before I got bored. I am looking forward to The Secret World coming out. Not that excited about Star Wars anymore. The more I read the more people say its just like WOW.

Name one post-WoW MMORPG that isn't?

What are you talking about? It, if anything, is an extremely polished WoW. It doesn't have as much content at the moment, but it doesn't have seven years and three expansions behind it either. It is what WoW would be like, to some extent, if it were made today.

Well, this isnt really what I was expecting TBH. The way my brothers friend talks about it, its the next best thing to sliced bread. I knew it was pretty similar to WoW, as Ive watched alot of vids and such on it, and its pretty much WoW with a different face on it I dunno, maybe Ill just convince him to stick with WoW for the time being or go with StarWars (I played the BETA, its not a WoW clone like youve heard. Similar sure, but like Sol said, what MMO isnt?) If I go the WoW route, maybe Ill get that new expansion coming out with the Panda bears, Ive wanted to roll as a Monk type in WoW since Burning Crusades

Rift is another typical hot key mmo.

I'm getting star wars when it comes out because I love star wars and I'm tired of WoW.

If i was new to MMO's and had a choice between WoW or Rift... I'd likely choose Rift. I find the class system extremely engaging and you arent so pigeonholed.

If you're looking for fantasy based MMO's on the horizon keep your eye out for TERA online or Guild Wars 2, they are action based mmo's and not just the typical hot key mmo.

It's a solid game, but nothing to be jumping for joy about, I personally think it is better than WoW, but not by much...

Well better then WoW is better then WoW

Im pretty bored with WoW, it doesnt matter how many expansions they drop, it gets REAL old real fast. And Ive heard the Rift community is overall better then WoWs. Granted all MMO communities has its share of asshats, but WoWs, seems to be something they work at. I swear Ill get cussed at for the dumbest reasons. And its annoying when your in say, a lvl60s dungeon and your called a noob. You just want to punch the damn screen out

Gathering the Informations.

The Rift community is mostly ex-WoWers.

So no, it's really not that much better. The reason they have such obnoxious playerbases is the attempt to bring in a wide audience.

I dunno, I found the people that stuck with RIFT tend to be more mature players than WoW's mainstream gamers.

I like Rift a lot. The class system is pretty awesome - I like being able to switch from melee dps to ranged to tank to bard on based on what we need, and the zone events and stuff can be a whole lot of fun. Pvp is a little lacking I think, and the crafting is decent but nothing special if you are into that. I do love the non cartoonyness of it, and the endgame content is plentiful enough to keep you interested. Worth trying out for a month at least, maybe it'll catch ya, maybe not.

Sounds good to me. Like I just posted in my StarWars thread about WoW, I like it an all, but its just getting so stale to me. Its really showing its age on many levels and the community just gets on my nerves. I still play it on and off (mainly because its one of the few MMOs my old ass PC can handle ) I mean, its not that I hate WoW and wanna join the hate wagon, but Im looking at it like, Ive played it, I had some fun, but its getting tiresome and its time to move on. Ok cool, so Ive seen more then a few people saying nice things on the game, those pretty much match up to what Ive heard/read from reviews and other folks that play it.

WELL! We have decided to just stick to WoW and check out all the new stuff they have done. Because when we last played Wrath had just came out. So things are rather different, even down to the classes and how they work. We are liking it so far, and we are just on trials to check it out. So thats where we are going.

I seriosuly loathed Rift and have played quite a few MMOs in my time.
I found it uninspired, sub par graphically, sound and "feel" wise, wasnt original in any way and was frankly boring.
I'd recommend doing some real reading/viewing before paying for it.
I'd go so far as to say its the worst game I've played in the last 2 years.

I wouldnt say its completely unoriginal. The "rifts" are a pretty new concept, at least from MMOs Ive seen. But like I said, I know WoW, and the changes theyve made, makes me want to further explore the world and see whats different and all that. Not to mention....Monk class. FINALLY. A fething Monk class

Hmm, I just saw the Rift events as public Qs from Warhammer online though so to me it wasnt great.
Bear in mind I've dabbled in war, wow, conan, rift, aion, doac and will give SW a whirl so I suppose Im just jaded with mmos.
GW2 does look highly interesting though.

Yeah at eurogamer expo 2011 the rift booth was directly next to the GW2 booth (where I spend most of the day, shocker eh?) and the difference is quite amusing.

I've been playing rift for awhile now, and I like it quite a bit. My biggest complaint is the dev team includes certain notorious members from WAR, and it shows. They are getting a little better about how they do things, however. On the plus side, they've been pretty solid in releasing content. The PvP in the game is a let down, but I enjoy the raiding. At end game, there is almost always something you can be grinding, and enough different things to grind out that it keeps even my ADHD arse interested. Changing roles on the fly is awesome depending on what you are playing and what you need.
