So, I watched these trailers for Star Wars: The Old Republic:
It's all 3 trailers in order.
It got me to thinking. I think they are better than Episodes I - III. Now I get that there's
alot of love for the newest versions. My son who's 21 explained best by saying "It's our
Stat Wars". I just feel that that generation got screwed.
I also realize that 15 minutes of cinematic game trailer are not a real comparison to 3 full length
movies. But, for trailers, they got alot of story, character and decent light saber duels accross those
15 minutes.
What does the OT think?
Well, about this topic too.

thats why it broke my heart that it was turned into an MMO
KOTOR 2 even echoed out my thoughts on the force through an awesome character named Kreia
as for the videos:
If it wasnt for the faces sometimes youd think they where live action, especially the first trailer. They spent some serious dough on these trailers

I waited in line for two hours for the opening of Episode One, I learned that day not to ever get my hopes up for anything ever again. George Lucas ruined my life.

I can't fathom why people defend the prequels as good movies. There are objective qualifications that can be applied to movies, and they fail on almost all of these. Even subjectively, you have to be a fairly shallow individual (or at least be someone who turns their brain off at the movies) to think the prequels were even in the same ball park as the originals. That said, I like Swtor, and am playing it mostly as a sequel to Kotor. It's probably not going to be an MMO I play for a year, but I want to burn through most if not all of the storylines, because they are actually fairly awesome.

I'm pretty sure I'm older than you, and can remember waiting for around the same time for tickets to see Empire.
2 totally different out comes. I left the theater with my mind blown. well, i was 10 too.....

Yeah you are little under 20 years older than me. I'm a rabid Star Wars fan and episode one made me angry...very very angry. I never sent G. Lucas but if thoughts could kill...
My older brothers saw the opening of New Hope when they were kids (bit of an age gap) I blame them for my Star Wars problem.

I actually didn't mind Episode 1 that much. I found the Kid a lot more annoying that JarJar. I enjoyed Revenge of the Sith a lot, it was the best made of the prequels, IMO.
That being said, I kind of wish they had made an Old Republic movie, instead the re-releases in theaters they are doing.
Episode One is a really weak movie. The cast is full of big name stars, but each is terrible in this movie, giving performances that range from phoning it in (Liam Neeson) to utterly bizarre (Natalie Portman). The effects were decent in some places, and pretty crappy in others. The script is a shambles, padded with pointless scenes where nothing meaningful is at stake. The music was wonderful, though.
The films got better, particularly in effects (as pure spectacle the third film is very impressive). And most importantly, either Lucas developed some techniques to direct his actors, or they simply got better at establishing their roles without direction.
But basically the trilogy was stuffed from the beginning because of the structure set up by the first movie, because everything that matters happens in the third movie. The result is two films full of padding (travelling through the planet, the pod race, the droid v gungan fight, chasing the bounty hunter, jumping through the factory, the fight vs the monster becoming the Jedi v droids becoming the clones v droids) and one movie absolutely full of everything . Consider the pivotal moment in the future of the Republic, the Emperor turning on the Jedi, it’s a 10 second montage, and compare it to seeming ten minute action sequence of Obi Wan jumping through a factory.
The result is a trilogy that consists of Jedi standing about, ineffectually doing pointless gak while the main conflict vs Palpatine is only hinted at for two whole movies.

I've heard multiple times that Gee-el wanted Star Wars to be Anakin's story, and that the prequels were to illustrate his decent into darkness and increase the impact of his eventual redemption.
Instead, he made three movies where the character you were supposed to be focusing on was flat as sheetrock and the least interesting thing on the screen.
There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable.
Yeah, if Lucas would have simply let someone else come up with the very basic outline, it would have fixed seriously 75% of the problems.
Episode 1 : Obi Wan does some stuff and discovers teenager Anakin Skywalker who is a badass but conflicted teenager (possibly played by a digitally de-aged Sean Connery, in my dreams) and decides to train him because he is a young rogue who flaunts the wisdom of the jedi council. Trouble begins to mount when some shadowy figure agitates a coalition of systems to create a huge army of clones, neutralizing the republics overwhelming manpower advantage (clones are bad) Note - no damned child actors
Episode 2 : Anakin, despite being awesome at the technical aspects of the force is constantly at odds with the creepy, dispassionate views of the jedi, creating an understandable character. Evil dickheads continue to fight the republic with their clone armies, and all the character development happens throughout a republic riven by their first major war in thousands of years - once again clones are bad and no damned child actors.
Episode 3: Anakin is gradually seduced by the dark side, not because it's EEEEvil, or to save some chick we are forced into thinking he loves, but for believable reasons like the fact that rejecting all emotion and forcing others to do so is creepy, and cultish, or out of a desire to use the dark side against evil because no knowledge is bad in and of itself (or so he thinks). Note, yoda never picks up a lightsaber, clones are bad, no fething child actors, no pods racing, and no cartoon rabbits. No defending your movies as being for children because people think they are stupid, when they have boring intros about space taxes and idiotic trade disputes. Obi Wan is the protagonist throughout, he goes from being a rebellious new Jedi Knight with no respect for the council to respecting the wisdom if not overall goals, motives, or methods of the council, to a betrayed and broken man.

Yeah, I’d do something similar, especially the no child actors part.
I
I’d start with Anakin as a young Jedi, though. The first film would be the discovery of a new Sith conspiracy, linked to a plot to overthrow the newly elected Chancellor Palpatine. Obi-Wan and Anakin uncover this plot just in time, defeating an alliance of disaffected planets and greedy guilds. The revelation of the plot breaks out into open warfare, in which the modest Republican army is saved by the daring and skill of the Jedi. Anakin shines above all the other Jedi, especially as a fighter pilot. This captures the attention of Palpatine. While all that is going on, Anakin is already in a relationship with a Princess, and the Jedi order is worried about the politics of this event, they’re not just opposed to relationships in general (I mean, how do you have families of Jedi if they can’t have relationships…)
II
The war is grinding on, and the Jedi suffer greatly reduced numbers. The Order is divided, as many believe they are not Republic soldiers, and shouldn’t be fighting their war. Anakin considers them cowards. In desperation they agree to Palpatine’s plan to build a clone army, and have one last push at the enemy. This battle turns the war, but at great cost to the Jedi, and their numbers are a fraction of what they were. Anakin is fed up with the controlling nature of the Jedi, and this comes to a head when they ban his relationship with his Princess, citing political concerns . Palpatine works on Anakin, lures him to his way of thinking, and in the climax of the movie he helps Palpatine in leading the clone army against the Jedi, burning their temple and sending the survivors fleeing.
III
The third film deals with the Jedi and others surviving the rise of the Empire, and building the bones of the Rebellion. The Jedi are hunted by Anakin. A few escape, a few die nobly. The Princess is held by Anakin, and Obi Wan rescues her, and in the film’s climax defeats him. He becomes Vader.
The essential thing is to basically combine the events of the first two prequels into one movie, and split the events of the third movie into two parts. This gives events something closer to the amount of screen time they deserve, and makes the films follow a structure closer to the original trilogy, straight up stand alone adventure movie, dark sequel with bad guys winning, before a come back by the heroes in the third.

This!!
EP I-III are Lucas' vision of the story, not ours.
I agree that they dont stand up to the original trilogy, but theyre as much part of the overall lore as everything else: The EU, including all books and games!
Im not saying that Im a huge fan of the prequels, but they didnt ruin my life either. I was expecting a SW movie, and thats what I got. Did it tell the story how I wouldve liked it? Hell no. Does THAT make it suck? No.
The old republic really has an execellent story to it. Ive been following a "let's play" on youtube and the background is awesome!!
Well, I'll be the guy that says III wasn't all that bad. I liked the novelization a lot more than the film, but I will watch RotS.
I will also be the guy that says that 1 is more entertaining than 2, because of pod racing and the Darth Maul duel. Attack of the Clones is the only film in the series that I absolutely have no interest in watching again.
Drink deeply and lustily from the foamy draught of evil.

There you go! (I would prefer a de-aged Alec Guinness of course). Also, show more respect between Kenobi and Skywalker, more of a deep friendship to make the break more poignant. Good directors could have brought that out.

I would go ahead and read the novelization of Book 2, written by RA Salvatore.
Salvatore's work in the DnD cosmology (specifically Forgotten Realms) gives his work more life than the movie ever did.
