After some experience with how difficult it is to play a pure DoA army, I've been experimenting with the idea of hybridizing. But, I understand, it's got to be done - and played - very carefully, so as to avoid too much of the army arriving in such a way that it cannot support the rest of the army. Here is my current idea. What do I like best about it? In addition to looking like fun, I think I can easily field it with what I've got now and a little kit-bashing.
HQ
* Librarian w/Storm Shield Terminator Armor (Shield of Sanguinius, Unleash Rage)
Elites
* 5 Assault Terminators (3 Lightning Claws, 2 Storm Shield/Thunder Hammer)
* 2 Sanguinary Priests w/Bolt Pistol, Jump Pack
Troops
* 10 Assault Marines, 2 Meltaguns, 1 Power Fist
* 10 Assault Marines, 2 Meltaguns, 1 Power Fist
* 5 Assault Marines (minus jump packs) in a Lazerback
* 5 Assault Marines (minus jump packs) in a Lazerback
Heavy Support
* Stormraven (Assault Cannons & Multi-Meltas)
The idea is that my assault marines are my main combat squads, while my lazerbacks provide fire support. Their assault squads are basically there as the cheapest way I can think of to take lazerbacks (why, hello there 35 point discount!). In theory, I can also deploy them outside their rides to hold objectives in my back field.
In most cases, I'd deploy my vehicles as far away from my opponent as I could and behind cover. On turn one, they use a combination of flat-out moves and cover to get into position while blowing up my opponent's resources if possible. On turn two, when my assault squads come in, the lazerbacks continue to hang back - staying mobile - to harry my opponent with long-range fire, while my stormraven charges forward to let fly with multi-meltas, bloodstrike missiles, and assault terminators.
If necessary, I can also keep the entire list in reserve, with the stormraven either deep striking or flying in off the table edge, though this is generally a bad idea, as the vehicles don't have Descent of Angels and will likely come late to the party.
What do you think? Intriguing or misguided?
