Hey mates, recently I received a Steam Tank from a friend who won it in a random draw at a tournament at his store, and since he had no use for it since he played HE's, decided to give it to me since he had no use for it and to finish paying me back some money that he owed me. Now after building it, I began rereading its rules and I plan to be testing out in a 3,000 point game this week against either HE, Bretonnians, or Orcs and Goblins, and the fact of the matter is I have never used it before and this will be a first time for me. So anyways, looking for help/advice from those who have used it before and how they have used it, and whats the best average amount of Steam Points you should declare before generating more with a D6.

its best used as a big tarpit.

Get it into combat and let it grind away. It is very tough, although certain things can kill it.

Its biggest weakness is that your opponent doesn't have to kill it to render it ineffective. once its lost half its wounds it becomes increasingly dangerous to generate Steam points.

It also only does damage on your turn, in the enemy CC phase it just sits there and takes hits.

The cannon is more of a bonus weapon. its real benifit is grinding away in combat.

Like Grey Templar says, don't look too much at that big wound total, the thing is rendered pretty ineffective by taking a few wounds, even one wound can reduce it's damage output considerably. But it's a wonderful points denial unit, because even if it suffered so many wounds that its useless, the other guy won't get anything unless he kills it.

I generally go for 3 steam points, so I can't overheat, but then if I take a wound or two it becomes a matter of judgement.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Why would you worry about overheating on 3 steam points and 10 wounds? The stank only takes damage if you exceed its wounds. You can safely generate 4 and I often will go 5 (especially if I don't go first) for that 15 inch charge and 5 d 3 impact hits.

There's only a 1 in 6 chance the tank will fail (which yes, is still a chance, but since there's no risk on the charge distance I am willing to fight the odds on the generation.

Also remember you can heal the stank now with lore of life. The errata took out the whole magic doesn't work thing. The problem is so does enemy magic and anyone wielding lore of shadow will waste the tank.

A bret lord will slaughter your stank. Keep it away from his lord. All it takes is one six and its all over.

According to the GW FAQ the best way to use it is to be reckless and run things over from the start then once it takes a few wounds bring it back and use it as a gun.
