Not sure if this is an existing thread somewhere, (I searched around a bit before I created the topic, but feel free to redirect me). I was contemplating starting a Dark Eldar army, as there are way too many necron and marine players at my local GW. I have the codex, and was reading through it, (the huge blocks of upgrades for some units was a little daunting, but wth) and I figured I'd pick up the battleforce. However, this brings me to the point of this thread: What HQ should I get to supplement my battleforce? I was between an Archon or a Haemonculus. I remember from when I played Tau that I had to have a Crisis Commander in the army; Am I required to take at least 1 Archon? I was leaning towards the Haemonculus, but I'm open to suggestions.

I know nothing about the codex or those two options so take my opinion with a pinch of salt.

But my personal preference when selecting an HQ choice is to think about who has the biggest influence on the battle as a whole; either by unlocking a unit type, giving some special rule to the whole army or having a psychic presence (not really the case with DE, I know). Also you have to ask just how many points you want to spend on an HQ. If you aren't totally sold on the unit, get a slimmed down variant just to fill the slot.

It's all very good having, say, a close combat MONSTER who does nothing else for the army; but he only affects his base and a "12 radius around that. If you're sinking over 100 points into that, it can be a little silly at times if he gets stranded.

Hope that helps from a more abstract viewpoint..

No your not required to take a Archon. Both HQs are really good. Heamys can give your wychs a pain token were as the Archon is a beast in close combat if built right. It all depends if you have a general idea on how your going to play. Are you goiing to use mainly which, then heamy. If your going to mix it up and split between warriors and wychs then the archon is nice but try to get him some incubis. Also if your looking for more stuff for your dark eldar i can't stress enough to get raiders and venoms. With out these guys your wych are going to destroyed before they can get stuck in combat. So if you can decide on how you want to play i could help you decide better.

Read this:

Then read parts 2, 3 and 4 (obviously )

Dark Eldar have a tough learning curve and making sure you have a well thought out army in which you know the capabilities of every unit inside-out and back-to-front; and how they fit together to give the required synergy is essential to avoid getting pwned in short order.

Once you crack them however they are a top draw army. Good luck, but plan ahead to avoid disappointment...

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

You should really read those and Dashofpeppers tips. This helped me when i first started playing. It true that this army is hard to play but when learned can run circles around the enemy. Which is why i fell in love with this army.

And if you just want a quick and dirty answer: Haemonculous is a great HQ you will use in most of your lists, so that is a good place to start.

As far as dark eldar go, the way i build my list depepneds on my HQ, with haemonculi if i take them, and i would take more then one, i would run wracks wyches grotesques and pain engines. with a build like that you can have your entire army start the game with furious charge and FNP.

With an archon i take a more vehicle built list, ravager Kabalite trueborn in venoms w blaster spam, regular warriors, incubi and the like.
