if i can see 20% or less but can still see the vehicle can i shoot at it?

If so does it get a cover save?

if it gets a cover save what is the cover save? 4+?

i think you will find what you are looking for in the main rulebook, under obscured vehicles

looking at that but its being interpreted different ways by different people. imagine that. Plus, no offense, but i wouldn't be asking on a forum if everyone was agreeing about a rule in the rule book.

It's a pretty clear cut rule. I don't know how else you guys are interperting it. Unless of course you guys are arguing if a big flag or something is part of the vehicle for 20%.

Of course you can shoot and yes it is 4+. What's the argument? Someone doesn't own a rule book or something?

Thanks. we own 5 here at this moment. No, we just have people that are like "i saw a battle report where HERPDERP" so they trust you guys more than the rule book i guess. Have one saying that the cover save should go up to 3+ since its more obscured etc.

Thanks guys!

The value of the cover save os determined by the type of cover the vehicle is behind, not how much is in cover.

It's not automatically a 4+. Vehicles receive the same cover save infantry would. The only difference is in how much of the vehicle needs to be obscured in order to count as in cover.

For the original question, 40K has no rules for being 'more in cover' than something else. You're either in cover, or you're not.

If you can see it, you can shoot it.
If it's in cover, it gets a cover save.

Where your friend might be getting confused with the 'more in cover' idea is that vehicles gain a bonus to their cover save if you can't actually see the facing of the vehicle that you are shooting at.

what? How can you shoot at a facing you can't see? This is the first I've heard...

while it's true it says that, I don't think I've ever actually put that into practice. I'd imagine it'd be like if you had a tank parked right behind another tank and you were looking at the block'ed tank's back side but angled so slightly that you can barely make out the front part of the side armor?

I guess I can always drive up my rhino blocks with their backs to eachother and hope that anything shooting at them is at nearly point blank range where this may apply.

The facing you shoot at is determined by which quadrant you are in. So a model in the vehicle's front arc shoots at the front armour. If the front of the vehicle is completely obscured, but the firer can see the side, they can still shoot at the vehicle (becuase they can see it) but they still shoot at the front armour (because that is the facing they are in)... and so the vehicle gains the bonus to its cover save for the facing being completely obscured.

Edit - Late night brainfart. You don't shoot the facing you can't see. You shoot the facing you can see, with the cover bonus for shooting at a facing other than the one you normally would be shooting at.

If you can see 49.9....9% or less of a vehicles facing, from the facing you are in, you can shoot at the vehicle but the vehicle will gain the same cover save that an Infantry model would in that situation

If you are in a facing, but cannot see that facing at all (ex: you are in the front fac ing of a chimera that has a wall directly in front of it) then you can still shoot at the vehicle, as long as you CAN see another facing (ex the tank was angled such that you could see the side arc, but not the front) while giving the vehicle a 3+ cover save
