I'm in the market for a Leman Russ Demolisher Kit though I don't want to make a demolisher. I don't really like them. What I do want is either a Punisher or Executioner. What does dakka think about these two variants? What do you think are the pros and cons of each? Personally, I like the idea of the Punisher (having a minigun mounted on a tank turret makes me happy ) but a plasma cannon that shoots 3 times with greater range is equally appealing. At the end of the day, I'll magnetize them all anyway, I just want to hear what you folks think about them.

Punishers are 100% awful. They will do less damage than a standard LRBT in almost every single situation, for a much higher price. It can spit out 20 shots, but only 10 will hit, and after that they're only strength 5. If you put Pask in there you make it far more expensive but it actually becomes a half decent monstrous creature hunter. There's no AP to speak of so it's not great, but it almost works.

Executioners are fun. Expensive, but fun. Demolishers themselves are my favorite variant but I will take an Executioner once in a while, and give it plasma cannon sponsons for kicks.

I proxied one of my LRBTs as a punisher with Pask once and it seemed effective, although I was fighting orks.....so the AP- wasn't an issue. But competitively it's not so great huh? Bummer. On paper it seems pretty sweet.

Leman Russ and variations rated: IMO

1. LRBT: Can't go wrong with the basic
2. Demolisher
3: Executioner: You have to add the plasma sponsons to make it worth while.
4. Exterminator: Twin link, Heavy 4, auto cannon. Win!
5/6: Vanquisher or Eradicator. Both have their uses, but, limited to those. Tank killer or Scout killer, your choice.
7. Punisher: Only useful when it involves Pask, Heavy bolter Sponsons, and hull heavy bolter. Fun in casual, but, only there.

Well, without Pask you're doing the following damage to a group of Orks with that gun:
20 shots at BS3 = 10 hits
10 hits wounding on 3s = 6.6 wounds

Against small units this is okay, but a standard large blast template from either a Demolisher or Battle Tank will usually catch 6-8 Orks, who you'll wound on 2s anyway and do the same amount of wounds on. There's also the added bonus that they'll work on something other than Orks, like Marines or other armored troops. Punishers, while cool looking, just aren't worth it.

I suppose I'll try the Executioner and see how I like it. With sponons that makes 5 plasma cannon shots.....thats pretty awesome.

It can be overkill against a lot of targets, but anything that can make a Terminator squad disappear is worth a shot in my book!

Magnetise the turret, its really easy and allow you to switch between the Punisher and Executioner.
And what ever you do dont glue the sponsons or front gun since these you dont even have to magnetise (they stick by themself mostly and if not just ad a small amount of green stuff for a better fit).

Or if you dont want magnets then "blu tack" works wonders, cost nothing and takes you about 1sek

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Im currently fully magnetising 10 ork nobs (heads, guns, axes, etc).

10 NOBS??? Wow that's gotta be fun lol. Magnets hate me, especially when I'm working with Valkyries lol. But I plan on magnetizing all the Russ turrets.

Actually 10 Nobs with all equipment and heads was around 90 magnets (didn't magnetise shoulders or the pole on their back) and took me a total of 1hour to fix. Drill some holes and then just glue the magnets in place don't take much time. Important thou to double check the magnet polarity xD
I bought 400 magnets now and my only regret is that I didn't magnetise things soones

Russ turret for a Demolisher is easier than on the Battle Tank since the turrets are constructed differently for some reason.

If you take the punisher you gotta have pask in him to do adequte damage. Probly to expensive at 230-250pts(bolter sponsons) but hey its cool and fun in casual play.
