in a list without astorath the grim you are only allowed to take 1 unit of death company.

you can take a death company dreadnought for every 5 death company models in the list, does that mean you must include astorath to make death company dreads available as they are a seperate unit? it doesnt state it in the codex. i presume you can as there is no limit on the dreadnoughts, just a requirement of 5 standard death company, but im not 100% sure if this is right :S

A Death Company Dreadnought is a different unit.

If you have 5 DC in your list you can also take a DC Dread. If you have 10 DC you can have two.

i understand that but would you have to field astorath the grim to remove the 0-1 death company limit to be able to field death company dreadnoughts?

What Mannahnin said.

They way GW rules are written, when they say "unit of Death Company" they don't mean anything with Death Company in the name. They mean a unit whose name is precisely and exactly "Death Company."

Edit : To put it another way: Without Astorath you are limited to one unit of "Death Company." Within the unit of "Death Company" you can have three or more Death Company models. For every five Death Company models, you may select up to 1 "Death Company Dreadnought."

As said; you need Astorath to take multiple units of Death Company. DC Dreads are not units of Death Company.

Death Company Dreadnought /= Death Company. While they share 2 words, they are DIFFERENT units

So one unit of 30 death company allows you to field up to 5 DC dreadnoughts

Astorath allows me to take 2 units of 5 death company and 2 death company dreadnoughts whereas in a list without Astorath I am only allows to take a squad of 10 death company but I am still allowed to have 2 death company dreadnoughts.

Astorath does not limit death company dreadnoughts - He only removes the limit on the death company squads from 0-1 to any number. Death company dreadnoughts are limited by the number of death company models that you have and since you can have up to 30 you can technically have up to 6 in a list without astorath if the FoC allowed for it but in normal games you can only have 5 since there are only 6 troop slots. 1 troop slot for 25-30 death company and 5 slots for 5 dreadnoughts.
