Battle of Budapest

This past weekend 20 brave wargamers journeyed to Games and Stuff in Maryland to participate in the third annual Flames of War Historical Megabattle as hosted by Jeff Kautz. This years theme was Budapest (last year being El Guettar, and Stalingrad before that) - focusing on the German defense and attempted breakout. The battle revolved around holding objectives for as long as you could, accruing points based on how long each side held onto them uncontested, in addition to managing to escape via designated areas with German platoons. The russians had to assault into a ruined city, trench lines, and hills covered by 88's and Panthers, while the Germans had to deal with special scenario rules for fuel and ammo shortage!

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

Truly epic. Despite obviously being wargaming models, some of those photos capture the scope of the fighting in the East.

For someone who's yet to play the game (but is very interested in it), it would have helped to have had a few captions. A few (probably stupid questions) about the models and the game:

- how do you deal with placing troops in buildings? In this game, there appeared to be a lot of quite clever additions to the buildings to enable stands of troops to be placed in them (some of the ruins had what looked like polystyrene blocks inside them), while in other cases the models sat on the roof.
- some of the stands of troops appear to have removable models. Is that right, and if so why?
- what role do White Scout Cars play in Soviet armies in FoW? There were certainly a lot of them - are they APCs?
- were they IS-1s, IS-2s or both? It looks like both.
- why were the Panthers all (apparently) in different colour schemes? Were they all individual units? Or survivors of larger units?
- one of the explosion markers seems to have a light inside it. Is that right? If so, it's very effective.
