Subject: New to warmachine, need some help choosing an army!

Hey Dakka, so i know not a whole much about warmachine coming from 40k, i thought id be cool to get into warmachine since a new club near me opened up and alot of guys there play it. but heres what im having trouble with
I have no clue what army i want to play, they have the 2 player starter kit there with khador and menoth. but i also like cygnars color and some of the jacks in it
Im not really that big into the idea of cygnar being more of a shooty army, cuz it doesnt compliment my playstyle all that great, But i really like the idea of them being all zip zap electrical.
only downside to this is id have less troops from starting with the battlebox, and id kinda be locked into that army choice. sorta
As for Khador, i really like how alot of the jacks are modeled, only thing with them is im not all that big into how the man-o-war troops and such look. but other than that itd be cool, and on top of that id still be able
to choose my army if i got the starter 2player kit.
And menoth heres my dislikes and likes, i really like the idea of some of the models looking like knights and such as well as how the troops look, but im not sure why but all the maces they carry around kinda turn me off from the models.
even though this army has some of my more favorite models, like the vigilant, this is probably the army ive considered the most, as well as been most iffy about. their casters either make the cake or im a but turned off by, but the fact that
they look like knights keep me coming back to them
So im wondering which armys you perfer, and why? what are their play styles like and maybe some reasons why, or whats your favorite part of them
and your opinions on some of the models and what to do. right now im split between all three. but it seems best in my interest if i got the starter kit then id have two decent sized armies right?
thanks alot dakka!

You do realize you can paint your models however you want, right?
Cygnet is a combined arms army. You choose models to perform certain jobs and hope you have all your bases covered.
Khador is infantry machine. They spam infantry as well as Cryx. You'll probably only take one or two jacks at most. Don't worry about Man-o'-wars. They are garbage and you won't field them.
Menoth is more of a jack faction due to their Choir being able to turn mediocre jacks into murder machines. they are a synergy faction. They buff up their stuff and deny you the use of your stuff to win.
Any reason you're not looking at the Hordes side?

well yeah i understand the fact that i can paint them however, but i was just trying to get a feel for the armies,
i havent looked into hordes too much because one of the main reasons im getting into WM/H is because the warjack model. which brings me on my next part, i was kinda hoping to field more of a warjack heavy list for whatever i got into. so would menoth be the best for that? or the hard hitting khador army?

Any army has the ability to field warjack heavy lists, some armies you will see more warjacks more often. Khador is known for their tough-as-nails and hard hitting infantry, but the warcaster karchev the terrible (a warcaster encased in a juggernaught warjack shell) is built to run several warjacks, usually 3 at once. Keep in mind though, khador has the largest warjacks, and they do not have light warjacks which are smaller and less points, whereas all other factions have many light warjacks.
If you play Menoth, you will most likely run no less than 2 warjacks and will commonly run even more. One of my favorite menoth warcasters is Amon Ad Raza, and he loves running an army of light warjacks (I usually run him with 5 or 6 dervish warjacks in 20pt games). Menoth also has some of the best support for their warjacks and IMHO they have some of the coolest warjacks in the game, the Reckoner being one of my personal favorites.
I think you should download vassal and the warmachine engine, buy some books, and playtest some armies, before dedicating to a faction.

Hi Deathnotice!
I'm a newish player just like you, myself i've gone for Retribution of Scyrah. Reasons being that i just Elfs Yeah the Warjacks don't look good on the package but the other day i built myself two of their Banshee's and tbh they looked awesome. People were picking them and saying that they were really nice models etc.
Retribution i would say are a very balanced Faction not in exceling in either combat or ranged. However all the warjacks that Retribution do have some funky rule about them, for instance the Banshee has a cannon on it that if it HITS a model with a medium or small base it does a slam attack & if it HITS a large base then it knocks them down. Knockdowns are a very useful skill in this game from what i've noticed and this helps!
I'm really falling in love with Retribution at the moment.
Please update us on which army you choose!
Thanks

Hey. I was in a similar boat to you, but with Cygnar and Retribution of Scyrah. I eventually plumped for Cygnar. Here's a link to my starter thread, there were some great descriptions of the Warmachine factions by Deadnight, I thought they might help you! http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/443385.page
Good luck with whatever you choose!
