Im thinking of having a backup game to 40k so am investing in a new game, but dont want to spend $400+ and then find out people have moved on to a new one. Are there any games that have a medium to large following? I was thinking Inifinty, Malifaux and Warmahordes, but not sure how popular the games are outside of casual play. Anyone have any insight, as I do like the models?

Depends 100% on your local area.

There are more WM/H tournaments here than 40k ones each year. Other places would be very different.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

If you're willing to put a bit of effort in Infinity has some awesome support to build a tournament (prize packs, global rankings tables, etc) but you need to get it organised yourself (or with the help of your FLGS).

As frozenwastes says, however, a lot will depend on your local area. I'd say your best bet is to find out which system your regular gaming buddies would most like to play and get a bunch of you starting at the same time. That way you can build up your forces and learn the rules before diving into the tournament scene.

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Second the WM/H, they have great support for everything from offical leagues/campaigns to organized tournies.

WM/H is actually kinda designed and balanced for tournament play with a tightly structured ruleset much like MtG, and from what I hear I really makes for some smooth running competitive play (which I appreciate even though I'm a strictly casual gamer, the balanced ruleset lets me play soley based on the models I like and not worry abou getting totally curb stomped by tourney lists).

Hordes it is then! I still have a few ever blight models I held on to after my flags group quit playing. I loved my Rhyas army so after I finish painting my wraithwing will get started with it!

Somewhere in south-central England.

Various historical genres have heaps of tournaments.

Ancient & Mediaeval are the biggest.
Napoleonics.
There must be something for FoW.
Renaissance used to be popular. I don't know how it is now.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Renaissance is still quite popular, with the new releases from Warlord games, and alongside the relaese of Condetorri it ha spicked up. Napoleonic are one of the most played around here I think thou

It really depends on where you are, but WM/H has a strong presence in most areas.

You might also investigate to see if there is much of a presence for either Malifaux or Dark Age in your area. Where I live, there is usually a tournament for both every month or so.

Warmahordes is probably the only non-GW option for miniatures wargaming if you want a really busy tournament scene.

There are some historical sets that are gaining in popularity, but their tournaments often only occur at Gaming conventions. Do some research in your area and find out what's going on. Not knowing where you're located, I can't make any firm suggestions.

The good news is that except for Warmahordes, almost all other wargaming options can be had for a fraction of the $400 you mention.

White always goes first, which is broken.

Nuh-uh! Black may be tier 1.5, but it is still competitive. Those who claim that white is broken just doesn't know how to play black right.

I got turned off with chess ever since they released the en passant rule (pawns passing over?! HOW BROKEN IS THAT), and the total lack of expansions.

That Shuuro game is certainly interesting!

That said, I love chess but I haven't played for more than 5 years because of lack of opponents (except for the random Filipino tricycle driver who would never play you if there's no money on the line).

Depends on your area, really.

Around me, Warhammer and Warmahordescraft have about equal tournaments primarily because Warhammer is outright popular whereas Privateer Press is pretty good with tournament support.

In the US, Malifaux is also decently popular in some places with 3-4 tournaments a year in many shops. Same with Infinity.

D&D Minis and Star Wars Minis used to be popular, but have since been abandoned by Wizards. HeroClix is also mostly a MtG/Comic shop type of game.
