You can only charge another unit if the first unit you shot was a transport.

It does not make sense I know, but dems the rules.... I am sure someone can give you a page number if you need it.

That's what your other units are for.

If you shoot a transport with your unit and make it go *foom*, you are given express permission to assault the occupants with that unit - you are NOT given permission to assault any other unit.

If you shoot at a unit and wipe them out, you are in the open and have to suffer the slings and arrows (ok, melta and ordnance blasts) of outrageous fortune.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

AND the unit that you assault is the unit that disembarked from the transport your unit destroyed.

I don't know, in 3rd edition (pre-Trial Assault Rules) units used to be able to shoot at one unit and then charge another - you'd often get units firing in one direction then changing foot and charging in the other direction. Given that a turn isn't supposed to represent a linear set of events (i.e. it's not "unit moves, then unit stops to shoot, then unit takes out knives to assault"), but rather all of those events are supposed to be happening at the same time (i.e. "unit charges towards the enemy, guns blazing, and shoulders their weapons in time to ready close combat weapons"), the current system makes far more sense, IMHO.

True, but lets say fluffwise (and reality wise) Im shooting 1 guy at the vehicle, and i intend to charge in guns blazing into the dudes screening it with their bodies. Pew pew! I blow up the vehicle they are leaning against while charging in wildly but wait! Ive destroyed the vehicle, so, ill just pull out my tanna, grab a rock (or skull, or piece of wrecked vehicle) have a seat, and let the 5 rhinos, 3 razorbacks, 3 long fang squads, and 4 grey hunter squads shoot into me while i enjoy some warm tanna on this hot, arid, desert day.

I mean, in my mind i can see my dudes grinding to a halt "Crap! We dont have anything to attack with our hyperphase swords! Drat, oil break! Lube em if you got em!"

I can not see how this makes sense logically. You shoot one unit, and can not attack the other unit 2 meters from you in CC?

But:

The rules were not written to be "Real World" logical.

The rules are an abstract system used to simulate a battle.

What would happen in the real world has nothing to do with the RAW.

Hold up, so you were planning to assault a vehicle anyway? You'd still have been a viable target, as you wouldn't have been locked in combat. Or was it a walker with a WS?

You could always try to get the assault on 2 units if their close enough and the first one was your original target.

Not if the first one is destroyed.

So what if you were shooting at a non tank, like a Tfex or something and you killed it. Are you stuck sitting on your thumbs there?

Yes. You can only assault what you shot. If what you shot ceases to exist, you're not assaulting.
