Seeing as 6th edition is around the corner and chaos may be one of the starting codex I decided to see what shenanigans I could get away with the painfully old codex before its updated. I was running what I thought was a melta intense list before, after crunching the numbers I discovered I can run a whooping 44 meltas in one 2000 point list. Without further adieu I give you my new chaos space marine army, "The Face Meltas."

I would do that but I need as many bodies as I can get. I don't think I can trim enough points from other areas without losing meltas.

Well, I'd take a Sorcerer with lash of submission and mount it into a Rhino CSM unit. Scary list.

Sorcerer might work, but I feel that the prince is alot tougher, plus with wings he moves as fast as the rhinos.

Chaos lords aren't worth their points from what I've seen and played, they don't even have eternal warrior which means that most of the time my 90+ Hq unit gets insta killed the moment he steps out of his rhino half the time.

A lash prince only costs 155. They are good, but they are kind of a big target in this list. At long as you have decent terrain at the events you play in, though, he should do fine. If you can't rely on decent terrain, a lash Sorcerer is also a good option.

You could also optionally cut a unit to make points for a greater daemon. You've already got two Aspiring Champs in the list, but you could instead spend 10pts on a disposable one in your Chosen . The GD at 100pts + the champ is dirt cheap for what you get. And has great synergy with the lash prince. Lash can functionally give your GD much greater assault range the turn he arrives. And the two monstrous creatures assaulting together can be a great answer to a lot of hard/durable targets that would otherwise require you to shoot your entire army's worth of meltaguns at to kill. Like assault terminators, bloodcrushers, thunderwolves, etc. You can also use lash to string them out and assault from both ends to reduce how many models get to fight you back.

For the cost of one squad of the Chosen, you could fill out two of the CSM squads to full squads of 10 with a second regular melta. That would give you two units which are a bit more durable and competent in HtH, as well as capable of dealing out some decent damage with rapid firing bolters to the right targets (especially stuff like wyches, genestealers, bloodletters).

Another tweak you could make would be to give those aspiring champions with combi-meltas combi-flamers instead. I know you're going for the cheaper double melta stelek-style, but honestly I think you'd be better off with a couple of anti-cover-save aces in the hole than with two more meltas in an army that's already a sea of melta.

I think this list would do pretty well, but it's a kind of a pile of money and painting for an army which you'll probably find pretty boring to use. You might find it a little more fun with some tweaks, and still nicely competitive.

I'll give that some thought, as another monstrous creature would give me a better edge in CC. I see how the list works as it. Ill try to scrounge up some melta's as I currently don't have enough ( I don't think anyone has fielded this many melta's in 2000).

Well, a DP goes down quickly if targeted by a pack of Longfangs or a similar unit. This is basically the reason for me to go for a Sorcerer or two hidden in a transport.

I think with the points spent on a champ and combi you could almost turn the entire squad ino death guard. If you also lost one squad at the end or even took a basic lord with power weapon for cheapness you can have 2 actual meltas each squad instead a melta and combi.

Well I hear you like Melta Guns, but you might wana add more melta guns so you can melta gun while you melta gun melta guns.

Seriously tho, the list has obvious DrawBacks such as an in-ability to deal with large model count armies. You also will have problems against armies with large amounts of long range shooting, as you have none. You also have no ability in close combat, so if you get close and something like a termi unit/Paladins are able to get a charge off your going to be in trouble.

I also dont really get the demon prince, as lash serves no purpose in this list.

Overall its a good list for 5th edition (which is kind of funny) Playtest it and see how it goes.

I thought the lash prince would be useful for roping enemy units in range of my melta's. Maybe I should turn my havoc squads in to vindicators for range...though ill be losing 12-15 melta shots a turn versus 3 pie plate shots, not sure if its a good trade off, maybe defiler's? but they are pretty fragile...

Update: considering a new chaos codex might come out, do you guys think I should bother getting this many meltas since the codex might change the number allowed. Also considering tanks and armor might have hull points should I even bother?

Depends on how much cash and time you have to blow. Generally speaking, building an extreme army spamming and relying on one particular build right before a new codex or edition is risky.

How would you deal with Orks, tyranids, and long range, it seems like the list would fail to most armies but absolutely obliterate a few, are you against the idea of still burning there faces off but maybe add in a flamer here and there? could help with horde control..

My brother built a similar list at about 1750pts. At the local shop it decimated all the mech spam lists. It was awesome to watch. However he didn't max out the meltas quite as much since he took some obliterators as he swears by them. Fitting some in could help with some range issues, but would cut down your melta count.

As to the commitment to all the melta right before a core rule book change that could be followed up closely by a codex change, just do what I do to mitigate such risk... magnetize them.

I would strongly suggest putting combi-flamers on each and every rhino. it would give you what you need to deal with horde lists, and you still have plenty of face-melty melta goodness. otherwise, I love it.
