With the 6th Edition release imminent I'm sure you're all making sure you have the £40 or so ready to pick up the hefty rulebook on release.

But would you be happier if 90% of the fluff was removed and the price chopped in half?

I understand the fluff is one of the biggest draws to 40k but personally I've got 3rd, 4th, 5th books and numerous codices that I've still to read anything other than the rules.

Maybe they could then put more fluff back into WD.....

Am I the only one who would like a cheaper rules only version?

I'd want the fluff, personally. I'm happy to pay forty odd quid for a lavishly illustrated rule book full of fluff, but I guess I'm just extravagant like that. Plus, the starter set rule books often work out nearly free if you sell all the miniatures and such on eBay.

Id deffo appreciate that ! Thats the main incentive to get a starter set - you get a small handy rulebook with the rules and nothing else. Some dont like carrying the massive book around.

Get 'em boyz!

I personally think there should be both and you choose which one you want when you buy it, but that's logical therefore GW won't do it.

They do, do both. The rules only book is in the starter set.

They don't do it because they consider the fluff integral to playing the game. I agree with them on that.

I'm aware of this. I meant having the rules only version available separately.

Believe it or not, it is possible to have too many miniatures.....(yeah I said it!)

The high gloss, full color photographs between the Wargear and Points Costs are overkill...

The fluff, however, is great. It's typically in black and white and there absolutely has to be some personality in the universe. Plus, you're sneaking in depth and flavor into every player. It's a game that's based around feeling your army - building, painting, choosing your wargear and a fluffy paintjob, picking your favorite chapter - you need to have a little background to understand your army.

But what if the two armies in the starter set are armies you don't play then it's definitely not worth it or if you sell the models you have work as at a negative until you sell them all

But I need the big book with all the fluff and illustrations, the small rulebook just doesn't work when you beat someone over the head with it

The Dark Eldar codex was worth every penny for the fluff alone.

Precisely.

The Background's sole purpose isn't to fill the layout and to raise the pagecount.
Without the setting ( background ) this is just moving neutral markers around and a some dice rolls. The background provides the Armies to field, etc etc. So no, I don't think a background-less rulebook would be worth much. The few who don't like to read everything aren't numerous enough or wouldn't like GW's idea of a 'discount'.
