Ah, very cool. I have some pics of some of the orks and grots that I dipped over on the waaagh:

Dipping is the way to go. Did you use camo green as your skin basecoat?

I should be painting.

I'm contemplating Dipping Orcs for WFB. Did you thin the varnish or something? I'm currently dipping 'nids and it comes out thicker than that with my woodstain.

Whitedragon-

That's really nice. I was a little worried because I did not think orcs/orks would look good dipped, but they turned out really nice. They have a very "dirty" look which is truly orky.

I'm interested in what your Necrons would look like. Let us know if you have problems shaking them since they are so spindley.

The dip is a little thick for my tastes, and then there's the mold lines and plugged barrels. BUT. They look a lot better than my Orks, which have been sitting unpainted in a box for 5 years because I can't face the thought of painting so many of them. Base them up nicely and they'll look super-kewl. I think Orks are the next frontier for dipping (Tyranids, Necrons, Orks...) - the dirty look really suits them.

I think they came out great man, yeah there are some mold lines and such but thats really up to you. I would how ever suggest ( you possible have not gotten this far with them yet ) that you hit them with a coat or two of matt sealer, that will knock that wet look off them and really make the dip pop on those figs. They dont look as dipped after that too. May be try it on one guy and see what you think.

Love the Blood bowl Ogre as a boss idea, nice touch there.

Rafi: I used your tutorial on the waagh as my inspiration. Sorry if I forgot to give credit. I used camo green, codex grey, bestial brown, and mithril silver. The cyborks (gold bits) are sprayed boltgun metal.

To everyone else, I hereby swear to NEVER EVER remove another mold line, or drill out another gun barrel. For cryin out loud people, seriously, in 1000 pts i have 80 models and 3 vehicles, and when they die, I pull them off by the handfull, so I could care less about it.

I used MinWax Polyshades Antique Walnut Satin, and for my "dip stick", I glued thick straws to the inside of a paint pot lid, then I glue the model to the top of the paint pot lid, then I dip it in the stain, and then spin it between my hands upside down into my trash can. (kind like you're trying to make a fire) Comes out perfect everytime. The most important thing to remember is to STIR YOUR STAIN or all the pigment settles to the bottom and all you get is shiny.

As for the shiny, I'm going to use testors dullcoat on them after I get the bases done.

And yes, the big silver guy is my warboss, based off a blood bowl ogre. I'm suprised nobody liked my black orc rokkit boy.

THANKS FOR ALL THE COMMENTS!

they look pretty good considering the effort.

I'm fast-painting my black templar army for adepticon--not dip and flick, but certainly not the work i put into my warmachine armies either. i think the keys to having "quick" paint jobs are:
- clean the model, especially if you're inking, b/c you don't want ink to settle into mold/flash lines
- drill out the barrels/whatever is equivalent, it adds detail
- do a knockout job on the bases--add rubble, etc.--make the bases look really good, this takes away from the model and is easier to do than a fancy model
- conversions; if your models are converted really well and painted "quickly", the paint job won't matter as much
- consistent paint scheme--uniformity has an appeal all of its own, so use that to your advantage

Really, I think if you do those things, a dipped army can look "really good".

It's basically 'Extreme Inking'. Here's a nice site with descriptions of the technique: http://www.thewarp.net/war/theforge/ogallery/krull/krull.html

Here's my first thread on the-waaagh on dipping: http://www.the-waaagh.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12334&st=0

Another thread with some close-ups of different dipped orks post-dullcoat: http://www.the-waaagh.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12658&hl=dipping

Oh, and hey! Who doesn't like my Big Shoota-based grenade launcha? The WHFB 'arms in the air' guys are just for my brutes tho, who I rarely use as they basically suck and only get fielded when I want to tone down my Ferals.

I should be painting.

This is a bit off topic. Are the squigoths the 'toy dinosaurs' that people keep complaining about? If so, then the people voicing those complaints need to get a grip. Those are great pieces of conversion work.

those are but some are not which sucks to play against but since some people are stupid and think stuffed dino's with no work put into them count as squiggoths the good people like captainvyper are punished

Do not use the CLEAR dice!

Dear Whiny Space Marine Players,
you get 3+ armor saves on all your troops (save scouts), Assault cannons, a huge assortment of vehicles and weapons, arguably one of the best if not THE best tank in the game, funny helmets, and a partrige in a pear tree.

suck it up, space marines. You're the emperor's chosen superhuman warriors. stop whining like a guardsmen and take it like a superman!

Those are great pieces of conversion work.

Thanks, I appreciate that!

It is too bad that event organizers are unwilling to kick out folks who field stuffed animals and instead decide to ban all conversion efforts. I suppose the silver lining is that my marine army is a lot easier to transport.

Speaking of rubber dino toys....Adepticon is only allowing the Squiggoth rules out of Imperial Armor for their team tournament, so guess who had to buy a nice 400 dollar squiggoth....pics to follow soon.

Sweet armies! That goes out to da both of yas! Great looking figs. And boo on those pitching a fit on using dino's as squiggoth bases, bunch of whiney children that need to get a grip. Ugh. Worse, yer stuck buying the horrendously overpriced FW crap (great sculpts, terrible, terrible execution). Boo! Such restrictions, along with the "GW figures only" will keep me away from Adepticon (which seems odd, since it's an "indy" tourney...).

ps. Don't let robo see this, he might flip out at the idea that you can (and did) achieve quality results with dipping!

Currently they are not anything impressive. Base them and give them a coat of matt varnish, and my opinion might change.

Dipping is an interesting technique and can produce great results if done well. These orks could have been much better if you had you given more effort to removing excess dip.

Too bad dipping won't work on Marines or CSM. Anything that speeds up my painting AND improves it's appearance is good for me.

It can actually work on space marines, if you go to the links that Rafi provides earlier in the thread, I think its the Dysartes one, about halfway through or so is a picture of a chaos marine in blue and gold dipped that looks very nice.

You are wrong sir, it will work on Marines or CSM, it just depends on the color scheme.  I have also seen it look great on DW or other Bleached bone/white based chapters.

I am finishing the last 7 models of my DG army for Adepticon and they use a "modified" dip technique in which I water down the dip with mineral spirits and use it as a wash.  I then go back and do 1-3 layers of simple highlights on most of the fig.  I hope to have pics up soon.

I was even able to "Dip" a defiler

Whitedragon, any chance of you crossing the river to show off your ORks? I work at Medieval Starship in O-Fallon IL. Have a few guys that want to try the dip thing. You may be of some help. Would not mind seeing another ork player either. Monday nights are 40K. Let me know

Sirnotinthisfilm, thanks for the compliment on the squiggoth. Dont you fret he aint done yet, and he may just make his way into the Chi-town compititon this year. One never knows.

Anyone have pictures of dipped Marines, Necron, or any other armies? I'd be interested in seeing how the dipping works on armies with more linear features (like armor).

@Big O, I don't mind being wrong, but could you please post some pictures of how CSM's look after the dip process. I would love to see the defiler. My hope is that, your process could work on Black Legion paint schemes.

I dipped a marine to lead my LATD and he turned out great. I would get a picture but my camera sucks. My question is how do you go about getting the dip even. I swing my models around my head to centrifuge the excess dip off but that makes dark spots on the upper extremities of my models. Tips would be much appreciated.

Darrian:  The king of dipping threads is here:

http://dysartes.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2056

You will find all the info and pics you'll ever need.  Dipping wont do anything for your black armor, but the effect on gold or other metallics is VERY nice.  The best gold(s) I have ever done are on the Defiler and dipping really works well on boltgun/chainmail.  Gives it an aged look, great for Necrons, orks or nurgle especially.

I promise pics of the DG tomorrow.  It's too late and the baby is asleep so no go for tonight.

You what?!? Shake the dip off with a flicking motion or do what whitedragon did in this thread:

"I used MinWax Polyshades Antique Walnut Satin, and for my "dip stick", I glued thick straws to the inside of a paint pot lid, then I glue the model to the top of the paint pot lid, then I dip it in the stain, and then spin it between my hands upside down into my trash can.
