Get a case with Pick and Pluck, or the old eggshell foam they had.
Or gingerly pack them in another box, using something to pad them so they don't rub together and ruin the paint job.

Well I put mine in a box
I've got a box that fits a Land Raider, 3 rhinos, 2 Preds and a vindicator. I put it in my backpack, and then put a fourth rhino on top if I need it.
Its not ideal, but I only have a standard GW case, I keep meaning to buy a KR case or something, but have never got round to doing it.

Well, it's going to sound perhaps a little trite, but my vehicles go into my miniatures case with the rest of my army. That's my Sabol Motorpool for my Sisters of Battle and my Sabol Armoured Company for my Orks. I believe the Sabol folks actually do make a case that fits into overhead compartments in aircraft as well. The Battlefoam folks do too I think.
Now, if you can't do a case, I'd look at things like well padded boxes or even something like a Pelican camera case (though with some of those, you'll be approaching army case prices). Basically, you want something that will physically hold the models and padded enough to stop them from moving round (or at least minimize that movement).
Add to that the standard caveat to state that things do tend to shift, so remember some glue to reassemble things when you reach your destination and even some paint for touch-ups if you want. It beats trying to find those things the night before a tourney.

My rhino hulled vehicles are packed into a GW shipping carton with a custom cut piece of foam that prevents them rubbing or hitting each other when being moved.
My Land raiders are in a separate box (I only have three).
My eldar tanks are in separate boxes, packed and surrounded by foam, three to a tray (staggered).

Bite the bullet and buy a decent army case. Battlefoam, KR, Sabol, whatever, and buy laser cut trays for your vehicles. They're space efficient and great protection. For example, I assume you play Orks due to your sig - Battlefoam have laser cut trays that hold 3 Battlewagons, or 5 Trukks, or 9 Killa Kans, and more. They have laser cut trays to hold up to 60 normal sized Ork models or hybrid trays to hold different sized models. If I guess wrong and you don't play Orks, there's plenty for every race. Other companies might not have the huge selection Battlefoam does, but they've all got good storage and transport systems for armies.
Once you go with a proper army case, you'll wonder why you never got one previously.

Okay, as a luggage handler for a major airline, here's a few key tips:
1.) get a hardsided case
2.) get a hardsided case
I can't stress that enough. We are pretty much playing tetris when we load aircraft. Any given piece of luggage might have several others places on top of it. Basically, if you wouldn't feel comfortable sitting on it, don't check it. Also, the sorting machinery (that we have no control over) isn't kind to cardboard boxes.
Like others said, bite the bullet, and get a decent case, they are worth not having your hugely expensive vehicles getting trashed. Also, try to get something that can be fitted with a TSA approved lock. This is mostly to keep it from popping open. The most secure looking latches still have a tendency to pop open when they get handled.

Ship it. As someone who travels by air a great deal, I would NEVER put my models into the hands of the Airline or TSA. A checked bag both ways will cost almost as much as shipping your models, bag, box and all. Further, there is NO guarantee that a carry on bag will actually make it into an overhead bin or under your seat. There's really just no guarantee. You do not want your models to be checked. You also do not want TSA to open your bag, mispack everything, and then give it to a thrower who will likely use the nice, square bag a part of a base to stack other large, heavy bags on top of.
Ship your models every time. If you can't drive, ship it. Your package WILL NOT be opened. It will be handled with more care than the airline. It will reach its destination. You can ship to most hotels and they will often allow you to put a package in the mail, or you can find the local UPS, Fed Ex, or USPS location.
Ship your models.

Well, my vehicles are designed so that I can fit about 6 of them in one tray of pluckfoam in my army transport bag. How you ask? Well, I did not build any of the interior. This way the vehicle becomes a storage device of its own, I take the turrets and stuff them inside the tank. If it has sponsons, I add magnets to make the sponsons removable and re-attachable. I think the army transport bag is one of the few that fits in on an airplane. depending on the types of models you have or their size you can fit about.... 20? 24? per tray been a while since I last checked through my bagged armies. The models would all have to be simple and monopose though. Multiply that by 5 and one tray of rhinos, thats about a 1500-2000 point mechanised marine army depending how you build it. That said, you should probably be putting it, as mentioned above, in a tool-box, and stuff that inside your suitcase. I would find some blocks of wood, cut to size, so that when you close the toolbox, it acts like a suppor/frame from the inside, so that JUST IN CASE, that bum-hat of bag checker decides he wants to play rugby with your suitcase, the box won't crumple.
