I don't about anyone else but I have a real emotional attachment to my army. Personally, I love the tau empire. Their story, their ideology, their tactics. So when ever I see someone knock them I almost feel as though its a personal attack on me.

Anyone else feel like this about their respective armies?

Somewhat. I play Ultramarines. They get ragged on a lot, due to some abysmally bad fluff and writing that got piled on them. A lot of the Ward hate got transferred to an otherwise innocent army. Since I started playing my army back in the RT days, it irks me what GW has allowed to happen to it's image. They weren't this bad when I started playing them, but kids these days don't remember that; they just have the latest fluff to work from.

It's a silly attitude. There's nothing sacred about toy soldiers and their background lore.

Being such a comparatively new army and their play style is pretty much the opposite of every other army they miss out on the respect they deserve because don't take the time to learn to play them right

Yep. I play (and love) both Ultramarines and Space Wolves. One hate group comes from a disassociation of Matt Ward hate (and it will eventually hijack this thread, watch), and another from a group that apparantly can't handle the Wolves.

I chose Wolves because I love Vikings and the asatru, and we share many personality traits. I tend to take those a little more personally. You have to realize that this is the internet, where anyone can and will pop off because there is no repercussion.

Well, not everyone will, but they can.

What makes their fluff bad? From what I have read, it's not horrible..but I don't know all of it.

There are a couple of places where they are played up as the super awesome dudes who are the best at everything, and all other marines wish they could be just like the Ultramarines. They are sparkly-shiny in a grimdark world. First among equals of all the chapters. They are the knights in shining blue power armor who always swoop in to save everybody's day. They have plot armor so thick, nothing can touch them. Etc...

Now, everyone has fluff that makes them sound the best in their own codex. But some of the Ultramarine stuff is a little over the top. Plus they are over-exposed with their image on ever single box of marine stuff. I think there is also a hefty dollop of Internet self-reinforcing meme going on. It's "cool" to hate the Ultras, so everyone hates them to be cool. People who might not know the "why" behind it just do it because everyone else does. And at this point there is a lot of momentum behind the hate.

I used to play Ultramarines so I know the feeling, however I started to question them after I thought long and hard about it. They are THE codex chapter, yet they had loads of stuff that others didn't (this is 3rd Ed through to the latest codex) There were all these special characters and were just about every where, every 'How to paint' was an ultramarine one, every game was an ultramarine game (not including DoW and RoW) I started noticing everyone else played ultramarines too. All these things led me down the path of resenting ultramarines, nothing Matt Ward ever did made me like them any less. By that point it was already too late.

I used to be really insulted by all the 'smurf hate' back then but I eventually started to agree with it...

everyone will to some degree feel this way about their army/ies, otherwise they likely wouldn't have gone with them. That said, it's probably best not to identify too closely with a particular faction, if you start imagining yourself as them, or that you somehow share personalities or something with them, you probably need to step back.

There's nothing wrong with liking a particular faction or feeling defensive when people say bad things about it, but keep in mind that there are also reasons for such dislike, because to be frank we do have fluff that is poorly written or poorly fitting and fluff that does come across as overdone and overhyped. We also have situations where some armies get hate for their lists. I'll use SW's as an example, sidestepping quality of fluff, the way their army list was designed, it emphasized a playstyle more associated with the Imperial Guard (lots of heavy weapons troops and IFV's that sit back and shoot) than what one would imagine they'd really operate like, and that also frequently rubs people the wrong way.

I Understand, the Hate-Trains are annoying, but I feel you should always take it lightly, never get too upset, and if all else fails, make fun of their army

Sounds like you're way too attached to your army. Also, I'm curious, when you say people knock them, are you referring to people saying that tau are actually kind of evil even though they talk about that greater good stuff?

I hate when people tell me my old Dark Eldar models suck! I like em, you don't have to, but if you pick up my model and laugh at it prepare to gso mon-keigh.

As far as the army itself, yea I do get a little defensive. Kind of an innate "rally around the flag" deal I guess. No sports teams to attach my ego to so I attach myself to a 40k faction haha

I had a friend who absolutely loathed old models, and as a result gave me a constant hard time about my RT/2nd ed era Space Marines. That wasn't enjoyable, but people tend to think they're cool so whatever.

I honestly don't feel personally attacked or whatever when it comes to things online. I just wish people wouldn't parrot the same complaints time and time again and would come up with some original thought for once. Yes, I get it, you don't like Grey Knights fluff. Now move along, I don't need to hear it again.

I love older models, almost always prefer them to new ones (especially ones made in material that shalt not be named). My pride and joy of my IG is def a pair of these babies.


I've never been attacked for it though. If anything people get a kick out of seeing something that looks goofy as crap, and it's bullets hurt just as much as a new one.

I hate marines because everyone plays em and they are so strong. straight up traditional sort of hate mongerer i guess.

I wish we had the fantasy mentality where pretty much all the armies were on equal footing (except wood elves) and there wasnt obvious designer bias towards certian armies.

So i guess i hate the fluff and army less than i just hate the way games workshop treats 40k.

I had always heard that demons got the space marine treatment in fantasy. Did 8th nerf them, or have I heard wrong?

8th significantly reduced their power but they're by no means bad. The extent to which they were broken in 7th however I don't think has ever really had a 40k equivalent except maybe 2E Eldar.
