At 1500 I'll run either 1 or 2 groups of 3.
IF I have spare points that aren't doing anything... I still wouldn't upgrade them.
Until 6th (haven't had a chance to rethink them yet) I typically held them back in reserve. When they came out I would hide them behind a hill or something.
Then, in turn 5 I'd move them to contest objectives.
If playing against something other than marines I *might* consider using them to harass certain enemy troop units by doing flyovers with the bladevanes. Never had much luck doing that against marines though.

Do you have the models? Then my question is: Why not? Give them a try yourself, can't hurt.
I personally haven't much love for bladevanes, but if you're gonna flat out the bikes anyway, you might as well do some damages on your way. In 5th ed, they were mainly used as distraction as an unit of 3, they will either get shot to death early on, giving your precious raiders and things an extra round to live, or they'll just be ignored and you got some mobile blaster fire to pester your friend with.
I haven't played 6th ed yet, but with the whole jink save + skilled rider buff, I'd probably take an unit or 2 of them.

My friend uses them to knock FMCs out of the sky. Works pretty well, half the time he just kills them outright.

Heat lance for me, even though it saves only 3 points per upgrade, I still would rather save that 3 points than lose it. Blaster reavers are probably more reliable now though, with jink saves, and the additional EJB movements in assault phase... So might shift to blaster(s) when my gaming group moves to 6th ed. Blaster has always been more reliable as AI or AT. I'll only arm my reavers with those bladevane upgrades if I have spare points, because I couldn't see them surviving that long in 5th ed, and I couldn't see myself not using the jink + skilled rider + EJB assault movement to fire those blaster every turn(once they get into position) in 6th. Arena champion may be good as well this time around, just in case you still get assaulted after all that crazy mobility...
