Hi everyone!
With the 6th edition fortifications are taking more importance in the game, but GW buildings are both expensive and...imperial...
15 years ago however, GW released plans in WD to build an simple but efficient set of fortifications, with nothing but a cornflakes box, a pair of scissors and some glue.
Here are the major elements to build these fortifications The measures on the ruler are in centimeters.
For my own buildings I'll use plasticard, but if you are using cardboard remember to leave some cardboard bits to glue each part with another.
(There is an error on the square: it should be 8cm on each side.)
A simple shooting position is made of four trapeze parts and a square floor.
You can make junctions between each shooting positions with two extra trapeze set upside down and a 3cm large floor, which is a good way to build a line of fortifications on the battlefield. you can even double the lentgh of the trapeze in order to get a longer junction.
You can also cut a trapeze in two equal parts to leave an open angle (to include a shooting position into a larger structure (as I did here).:
On this example You can add a central building of your choice.
On the following pics you will see the number of models you can set on each side of a shooting position.
3 standard models
2 large infantry bases
1 montruous creature/deadnought
I'll post later my progress on this example, turning it into a CSM firebase.
With the basic elements I've described you can build a large variety of fortications, and work on their aspect to make them fit your army's aesthetic, just use your imagination!

How did you elevate the floor?

It depends on the material used to build the fortiication.
For plasticard, here is a method:
Take the trapeze parts (to answer Anpu42, it's 7cm on the top side and 9cm at the base)
draw an 8cm line (the size of side of your square floor) 2.25 cm under your top (basically in the middle of the trapeze)
Once your shooting position is assembled, the square sides should normally set along these lines
Then to reinforce the floor use some bits of sprue that you'll glue under like this:
Anpu42 wrote:Could you post some basic "Blue Prints"
Well I son't have some yet, but with the measurements on the first pic and those added in this post you should be able to work on your own buildings. However you're right, I should think about making some blueprints.
Here are some more elements: a shooting position made of cardboard (far quicker and cheap than to work with plasticard)
Once all the elements are cut, fold the pieces like this:
floor:
trapeze:
You'll need two trapeze with the little "wings", and two without for a single shooting position.
Glue the four trapeze together before setting the floor in place like this:
Don't forget than an access point is always a good idea
caminacambob wrote: I am quite impressed with the results!
Thanks man!
caminacambob wrote:Could you clarify on the junctions?
Sorry if I was not clear. To build a juction you'll ned two trapeze set with the larger side on top
And a floor:
Glue the two trapeze on each side of your access point, like this:
and set the floor as for the square floor of the shooting position:
If you ever need clarifications, please ask!
Also don't forget that you can change the scale to fit your own needs, it will work as long as you keep the same angles (77.47° at the base of the trapeze and 102.53° at the top)

After searching for the original WD in which the plans were released, I found this had recently discussed here:
http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=270786
The original plans are different from what I recalled, so you'll notice differences. Anyway, both are working and give similar results (even if mine looks better )
I'll still post "variants" of these plans and examples of how you can use them in different ways.

TigerLightning wrote:Any recommendations for texture for the exterior walls?
Well, there are so many possibilities that I can't recommend one in particular. These fortifications are generic enough to be adapted to most of the 40k armies (even tyranids if you cover the wall with infestation markers).
The best way to work on it would be to add some specific layers of plasticard (or whatever material you're using) shaped to fit your army's theme.
For example: make an extra trapeze and cut 2 arcs into it, add 3 stripes onto it (one at each side and one between the arcs), put some rivets all along the stripes.
You can also reinforce the arcs to give it more relief and you should end with something quite imperial, in the same theme as this pegasus hobby building:
I can't work on my own buildings to give you other examples for now, but with a little imagination you can make wonders out of these fortifications.

Conduct While Gaming
While rolling a die, do not say, “Anything but a 1!” unless you wish the die to come up as 1. Any other such attempts to anger the “Dice Gods” will result in the existential equivalent of continuously flipping a coin and having it come up heads every time (for reference, see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead). Your dice will be cursed to roll ones for everything other than morale checks, which will come up sixes.
ORK PLAYERS HAVE A LIMIT OF 1 SCREAMS OF WAAAAAAGH PER HOUR. violators will be forced to play tau.
Players with chimeras and las weapons shall pronounce chimera ki-mere-uh, not chim-ere-uh. Violators will be forced to play nothing but world eaters. Non-40k personnel must purchase and build a chimera. |
