So, I'm relatively new to 40k and warhammer in general. I dig all the painting, collecting and playing (small army of space wolves so far) , but one thing bothers me.: everyone's all up in arms because of the prices and gw making the franchise more easily accesible. Should I fear the whole thing is gonna get (more) crazily expensive, or does anyone know something on the contrary?

Easily accessible to whom? Franchise? Nope there is no GW franchise. Just GW stores and LFGS that carry their products. The cost? I suggest you take a good hard look in getting into the hobby. And if you do go at it slowly because it is an expensive hobby to get into.
Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-
"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".
Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?
You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.
To answer your question , yes , prices will rise every year like they have been since I started . And yes , there will be grumbling about it on the internet .
And because your new , I'll try and put some things in perspective for you . GW has never had a sale . There are rumours that they did have one way back before Nixon ascended to Deamonhood , but my BS alarm keeps on going off when I hear that one .

Some friends of mine complained they are simplifying the rules, so kids can get into it (with their parents' money). Just something I heard. Thanks for the heads-up: I'll go bargain-hunting then.

i sometimes think it would be a really cool place to work. but then i think no more likely it's actually fricken horrible.
yeahhh, couldnt agree more. Makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable having them in my face while im trying to look around for stuff, constantly asking me questions and trying to sell stuff.
it may be their job and all, but damnit lay off a bit, jees.

That's exactly it, though - their job is selling GW models and supplies. It's a bonus if they actually know the rules of the game but in general you're far better off asking at DakkaDakka or some other gaming site.
You do get better deals on the products if you have the patience to look for third-party stockists online and maybe wait a couple weeks more. Some offer 15-20 % off GW prices and one imagines they're still making a profit in order to keep selling.
I dunno about all of you but my local gaming store has lowered their prices, so maybe you should look at the store you game at if its not a GW store. Their prices for the largers kits have gone up a little bit but no where near what GWs has, and for a lot of kits the price has gone down, a Grey Knight Strike Squad was $33 a year ago, and is $23 now. .
GW as a companty are not allowed to put on sales. They used to, years back, and because theyre the producer as well as majority reseller (in the UK) their sale prices could be below what they were selling to shops at. As they were, and still are, big enough to be a monopoly that was a big no no, so theyre enjoined from doin git.
GW want to shift less volume, as it means that they can carry more items in a shop, increasing store appeal. People generally have a fixed hobby budget, so they spend the same buying less.
