So I'm buidling up a space marine list using Cato Sicarious and it occurred to me that he has a nice Ballistic Skill of 5 that can be useful since not much else about him is that useful, I could put him to work operating my ADF Quad Gun practically guarantee all hits every time it shoots with him at the helm.

The Artillery Rules state that an Independent Character joining an artillery UNIT may not count as one of it's crew members for the purpose of firing the gun.
However in ADF isn't an artillery unit, being a fortification and all I assume that he can sit there and use it no problem.

So am I correct? Or is there some rule i've missed preventing me from enacting the above evil master plan?

Battlefield debris are not Artillery, the unit type, and the quad gun can be fired by any model in base contact

wait doesn't the gun emplacement have the same profile as the artillery gun? ive yet to actually lay down ADF but that was the impression i've had this whole time.

Gun Emplacements are not Artillery.

Artillery is a unit type with its own rules, Gun Emplacements have the same statline but different rules.

ICs cannot operate Artillery, but there's nothing stopping them from manning the gun on the Aegis Defense Line.

Ah now i see where I got this stuff mixed up, page 105 the gun emplacement profile is basically like the artillery profile thus I made the connection in my head.

Which brings up my next question....

Does the gun emplacement itself get a cover save within the ADF? It has a 3+ save normally which is pretty good but i assume missile launchers and lascannons are going to be the main things shooting at it, so would it benefit from being behind the walls?

Is it 25% obscured from the firing models?

That's all that counts in any non-area terrain question

That's not the part im questioning, what im questioning is wether gun emplacements can claim cover at all.

They are 'gun emplacements' they aren't friendly models or 'models' in your army list even though it has a profile.

I would find it somewhat similar to claiming a cover safe for a Bastion due to it being obscured by another smaller building/obstacle.

So for example, i don't believe a gun emplacement is allowed to go to ground or benefit from standard rules that 'models' in the army benefit from. Thus I ask...are they allowed cover saves?

The Gun Emplacement rules refer to it as a model:

"The type of weapon on the gun emplacement depends on the model that you're using to represent it - -"

Thus, it can claim a cover save from the Defense Line.

Also, from page 2:

"The Citadel miniatures used to play games of Warhammer 40,000 are referred to as 'models' in the rules that follow."

Does this mean that a Bastion bought from GW gets cover saves, but a scratch-built doesn't?
