Can a Space Marine Captain have a boltgun and power fist? Or does he have to take a boltpistol and powerfist?

The rule reads as follows: "Options: Replace bolt pistol and/or chainsword with: - a boltgun........... - a powerfist .............."

So the way I interpret the rule is that one may replace the bolt pistol OR the chainsword for one item. So if you replace both the bolt pistol AND chainsword, you can take two items. Is this tournament legal?

Thanks in advance!

So why would one keep the bolt pistol over the boltgun?

Yes you can have a bolter and powerfist. Swap one for bolter and then the other for the fist.

A bolt pistol might be a better choice as you can shoot and charge in the same turn.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

But a bolter fires two over watch shots and can rapid fire any turn you're not charging and can shoot out to 24'. I'd take the bolter (especially if you're talking hellfire rounds or a combi weapon ).

A combi-weapon is a great choice actually, you can use hellfire and get a melta or plasma gun for a turn.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

I'd think twice before takign something that lowers the Captain's initative to 0 - he is one of the few units in the codex with a highaer than average Initiative of 5.

It's one, otherwise he would never hit.

Another reason for taking a bolt pistol over a bolter is the weapon you combine it with. If you're using a normal power weapon, for instance, having the pistol version nets you +1A for having two close combat weapons.

Since it costs the same anyway, getting 1 claw instead of a power weapon. Then take a combi-melta with hellfire round. When you are far away, shoot hellfire rounds, when you are close, shoot melta and charge in (make sure you issue a challenge to kill off their character).

Stormbolter is a good cheap option to go with the fist. You cannot get an extra attack from pistol with the fist, and you cannot shoot and charge with the bolter so neither is a good pair for the powerfist.

You can fire the bolt pistol and still charge, if you fire a bolter you cant charge as its a rapid fire weapon and if your close enough to charge you are rapid fireing.

If you want the shots before charging take either a pistol or stormbolter, otherwise consider a power sword so you can choose to either strike at initiative or at I1, you get no bonus attacks but you arnt at a disadvantage by striking last in a challenge.
