Something that came up in a game yesterday when I had a unit of Necropolis Knights ready to drive out some Empire Swordsmen from a Watchtower:

Relevant rules (not verbatim):

Cavalry units dismount when assaulting buildings, so the mounts do not attack, no bonus to armour save and so on.

Monstrous Cavalry follow the rules for cavalry, with several exceptions. No exceptions are made regarding assaulting buildings.

The rules for assaulting buildings say monstrous infantry/beasts/cavalry count as three models when assaulting buildings.

End result:

If I charge the Watchtower with my Necropolis Knights, I get three 6+ save Tomb Guard fighting ten Swordsmen. I declined the opportunity and instead spent the rest of the game duking it out with a Steam Tank.

Questions:

Did we miss an exception giving Monstrous Cavalry permission to assault a building mounted? A monster and its rider are given permission to go in mounted, and the rule saying monstrous cavalry count as three models seems to imply the same.

Does assaulting a building with a (monstrous) cavalry unit change your troop type to (monstrous) infantry?
Logic says yes, but we couldn't find a rule stating it. This way Necropolis Knights and Demigryph Knights would at least get a ten-model assault party, as they would count as Infantry.

How do you figure out the saving throw of a dismounted Necropolis Knight?
The model has no relevant equipment listed, only a special rule that grants it the save it has. Our calculations led the dismounted Tomb Guard having a 6+ save, but a case could also be made for no save, as they have no armour listed in their equipment.

Are Monstrous Cavalry just really bad at assaulting buildings?

I would like to tell you that you did something but that would be lying. Everything you did was correct.

For the armor save, the special rule says you get a 3+ with everything added in. You can then break it down to +1 light armor, +2 animated construct, and +1 for being mounted. Thus logically you would have a 6+ armor but RAW you would get no save because you don't have light armor on your equipment. I would ask your opponent or dice off.

If you want to assault buildings I suggest getting an infantry block with a mean character.

Change and change until Change is our master, for nothing neither God nor mortal can hold that which has no form. Change is the constant that cannot be changed.

No game of chess can be won without pawns, and this may prove to be a very long game.

Yup, everything was correct. Cavelry of any flavor are bad for assaulting buildings. Ok, Mournfangs might be able to assault buildings but only what 3 regular ogres can kill. So some panzy humans.
