While i think the idea for the plasma gun is the best idea, how about casting some grey nights in a similiar way and use them as those ghost grey knights.

Any nemesis force weapon with this effect would be brilliant.Getting the diode into the little hand to light it up though... and the power source...
But maybe the dreadknight sword.

This is ridiculous, but heads up: This is not a GW product. I made a copy out of glue because it is impossible to achieve this effect otherwise.

Copyright law cases always involve some type of monetary damages being done to the holder of the IP. Essentially, no blood no foul.
For example, selling recasts. That takes money away from GW because I sold you a counterfeit. Illegal.
Or, a case could be made if I used GW's established detail to say "hey, my molds are so good I can copy this thing you've seen advertised". That is using their advertising for my gain. Monetary damage, so that is also against fair use. Illegal.
More abstract is the showing others how to make casts where many people might be influenced to try that and thus c-block GW out of a dollar or two. Shady.
Totally fine is saying "Hey I didnt want to ruin my fig, so I copied it to test stuff out on. Here are pics of that." It is fine because no one lost money. I wasn't going to spend it, it didnt show you any way to not spend it, and there is no way in hell GW would pursue a suit because that DOES cost money, and in the end they get laughed at. See also: Chapterhouse. That was more blatant, but still fair use. My glowing dreads hurt no one, and are fair use as well.

If you are doing this in your own home, not selling it, in America, and were not going to give GW money, especially if it is for a product they do not offer, that is about as textbook fair use as anything possibly could get. Posting pictures of it is apparently against dakka policy, because the line is thin and people mess up. But if you're not crossing the line, and GW doesn't lose out on a single penny... then wtf is there to sue for damages for, again? Nothing? Sue for loss of zero dollars? That'll be rich. Sue because I posted a pic of a recast? Not likely. GW terms of use state that you can't even post a picture of their products without written permission. If it gets more draconian and effed-in-the-a than that, I'm not sure where.

Give me a kit kat. Because I need to take a break, and so do you. Actually, give me a twix, and I'm not sharing.

This Is Where the Fish Lives

You can rant on the draconian nature of GWs copyright rules all you want, but the bottom line is you are still violating the rules of the Dakka forum. Their rules exist for a reason and not to take a line from the Dakka Mods, but "posting on Dakka is a privilege, not a right."

And some, I assume, are good people."

And that rule is available for me to look at where? It's not in the Dakka rules I've seen.
I understand the intent behind it, and have discussed it with mods. Still AM discussing it.
Actually, I dont Understand. If GW terms of use say you can't even post a pic of a Space marine without their written consent, why are pictures allowed to be posted on Dakka? It is something that violates

GW Terms of Use wrote:All materials on this site, including but not limited to images, artwork, text, audio clips, and video clips, are, unless otherwise stated, owned and controlled by GW and may not be copied, reproduced, republished, uploaded, posted, transmitted or distributed in any way. Modification of the materials or unauthorized use of the materials for any purpose is a violation of our legal rights. The unauthorized posting of any of our intellectual property, including any images of our products or other artwork on any other website, including, but not limited eBay, Amazon or Craigslist is strictly prohibited.

So... shut it down, I guess. Shut it all down, because pictures are AS illegal as recasting. Same with buying off of Ebay. Following those rules, everyone here just got screwed.

But seriously, there is nothing illegal or even slightly immoral about posting a dread made of hot glue lit with LEDs.
Haters gonna hate I guess.

I'll just be back next week with a custom sculpt of my own work that looks eerily similar, or just show the effect on a ball of waste glue. That's worked forever.

Derr, we are trying to figure out what to do about this, as you have done something clever and artistic and also impossible with out of the box GW, yet, it is still recasting and the method could be used for less scrupulous goals and we do not endorse recasting due to it's potential misuse. It will of course happen out there, we just normally do not allow discussion or tutorials.

You did the right thing in approaching Reds8n first, and we do apologize for the flipflopping. You will understand we have to be very careful about stuff like this. GW knows we exist obviously and thus far things have been pretty good and respectful between us, and we want to keep them that way.

Losing your temper right now and entering into conflict right now will accomplish absolutely nothing for you or anyone else, so please, everyone, just be respectful. It is perfectly possible to discuss this without getting emotional.

Whatever we decide to do about this, I just wanted you to know that we acknowledge the somewhat unique circumstances of this project and also that you sought out instruction before posting. We very much appreciate it and ask for a little more patience on this matter and also understanding for whatever final decision we render.

PS - Just to be clear on something - discussing legalities is irrelavant to the topic here. Dakka has it's own policies to be considered as well, and even if every lawyer in America said 'it isn't technically illegal' we would still be against recasting. Again, this is somewhat tricky as you have done it to achieve an artistic end impossible otherwise... but if that had been gs or opaque resin, this debate would not even be happening and the thread closed or deleted immediately.

I just wanted to make that part clear.

I understand fully, and have no interest in arguing. I will dial back my rhetoric to a more pleasant level to avoid the misperception of my losing my temper. I make fun toys - I'm a pretty laid back individual, and am definitely invested in keeping the discourse civil.

I have no desire to make recasts in resin or any other opaque substance, and no plans to paint over it (this is the showcase, right?). Not selling them, trading them or giving them away. I've turned away people asking how I do it with quips about my eleven secret herbs and spices. I make no claims to knowledge of how Dakka's legal process works, but I imagine that any incoming "Serve us Derr's head on a plate" inquiries are handled by someone on payroll, eating into hobby time and money. I understand the potential rectal ache on your part. I'm against recasting too - no mold is perfect (ask Finecast) or a replacement for tooled steel molds. GW product just looks better than my best recast.

But I also can't light it from the inside or smash it so that blood comes out.

Thank you for appreciating this as art, and not subversiveness. Glad I could at least create an INTERESTING problem of myself at any rate. I don't think I touched any of the laser beams as I danced across the issue though, so I think I'm clear if you guys allow this, which I hope you will.

pictures of recasts are not allowed.

Sorry buddy. Can't host/post re-castings here.

From Insaniak
At the end of the day, casting someone else's stuff without permission even just for personal use is of questionable legality in some countries, and outright illegal in others. As such, and given GW's general combative approach to perceived threats to their Intellectual Property rights, Dakka chooses to take the safer approach of just not allowing threads dealing with such things.

The point has been made rather clear. Intent doesn't matter, neither does the fact that yours is transparent. Regardless of legality such images and topics are not allowed here.

1. I didn't say anything about laws or countries.
2. Regardless of anything else, the pics are against Dakka policy.
3. I don't see awesomeness, I see a chunk of clear plastic that is lit up too bright to see any details in it. I also don't see anything awesome about recasts in general.
4. I have no clue what you are trying to say in that last line there. I'm guessing you mean that anyone who has premarital sex is a criminal, because the Taliban say so. If that is the case, that has zero bearing here, where real laws passed by our own governments are the jurisdiction. If the crime happens in the US, then US law applies.

Scratch building your own model is building your own model. Copying someone else's model is copying someone else's model, regardless of how you do it.

Scratch-building an Ork trukk that looks identical to the original would in fact wind up on similar shaky ground to this... it's still a copy.
