I'm a 40k player and I've been thinking about starting up a Fantasy Army.
I like the fluff behind Marienburg, more so then any of the actual provinces of the Empire.
The basic Idea for the list would be that the General, being a wealthy man, would spare no expense to arm and armor himself.
Once that was done, he'd probably become something of a skin flint, trying to assemble the most cost(in gold not points) effective army possible. After all, you don't stay wealthy for long if you aren't shrewd with your money.
I'm probably going to start at 1000, or 1500pts and build the army up from there.
So far these are the ideas I have for the army:
-Lots of Cannons, since while they're a significant investment, once purchased they are far easier to upkeep then a large number of men.
-Knights, either as a personal bodyguard for the Burger, or the sons of wealthy merchants "playing" knights.
-Mercenaries, easy to recruit, and you can disband them when you don't need them to avoid having to billet them for large periods of time. Plus if they get the meat grinder duties, you don't have to pay the dead ones. I'm not sure if there are still rules for mercenaries in Fantasy, if there aren't possibly using Free Militia as cheap mercenaries? I also had the idea to convert some Orges using Plate Armor for Counts as Demigriffin riders.
-Low Magic. Probably only a single Wizard and Priest if any. A substantial donation to the local church might buy the Burger the services of a Priest. Using the Rules for a Priest of Sigmar, but maybe modeled as a priest of Morr, or some other cult. A down on his luck wizard would probably be a good investment. Although, shelling out to retain a Wizard Lord seems a bit pricey, so probably only a first or second level wizard, probably as a scroll caddy. Maybe a couple of Bound items to use up any unused magic dice.
-Stank? I'm thinking about using a Steam Tank, either buying the Marienburg Landship, or scratch building something similar on my own. Nowhere near cost effective from the Burger's point of view, but if he's planning on taking the field personally, he'd probably prefer to do it from the safety of a Landship's forecastle.
If anybody has any ideas, feedback or possible army builds, I'd be greatly appreciated.

Its sounds fun. A couple of ideas regarding the play more so than the theme.
Free company suck.
Get halbadiers. And model them like mercenaries. Theyre our best troop and look preatty mercenaryful :-)
You pretty much need a level 4 atm for magig DEFENCE the +4 is nice. Perhaps write him up to be the estranged brother of burger :-) so hes free...
Like your stanknidea :-) pistoleers would be a good bet too :-) noble kids playing war :-)
Youll need a bsb. Perhaps his son?

Thanks for the feedback.
Hmm, you're right about the halberdiers, although I think I'll end up grabbing some free company to kit bash with them for an even more motley look.
Doh! Why didn't I think of the brother idea? I'd probably run him on horseback in/near a group of knights/bodyguards what lore would you give him? From a fluffy point I'd want to give him Metal. But if he's estranged from the family, he could realistically be doing anything. Although Death might mean that he's never brought up at polite dinner parties.
I like the Stank concept too, especially since it means that i'd be able to have both the Wiz Lord and the Burger on the field at the same time, without having to demote one of them to Hero level . It also saves me a bit of converting on the Burger, since I can just stick a fat merchant in the Forecastle instead of having to work out how do model a fat man in plate on horseback. The downside of course is that I won't be able to use the Ogre Mercenaries/Demigriff idea, at least until higher point levels.
You read my mind with the BSB idea. I was sort of toying with the idea of running a bunch of cheap mounted Captains together in a group of knights, and having the entire unit be fluffed as his sons, nephews, cousins, cousin's friends etc.

Would have thought after Balthazar had a brief stay in marienburg, gold wizards would be kinda ostricised... Id say heavens (fluffwise) as it predictive/weather control, very important for merchants...

Hmm, good point. I hadn't read up on Balthazar's bio until now. Lore of Heaven's would definitely fit the bill. Harmonic Convergence seems like it would be awesome on a unit of knights.
I don't have a book at hand, but here's a rough idea of a list:
Lords-
Wiz Lord- Horse, Neato Magic stuff.
Heroes-
Captain-Plate, Barded Warhorse, Battle Standard. Ruby Ring of Ruin.
Maybe a Priest- Barded Warhorse, Scroll,
Core-
Knights- Smallish, Heroes and lord goes here.
Halberders- ~50. Either as one hoard or as two smaller units.
Special-
Great Cannonsx2 Maybe swapping one out for a mortar
Rare-
The Burger's personal Stank.

if you want the look of cheap mercs, put some shields on some free company and play them as swordsmen, you can also make crossbow and bows from them too rough riders /pistoliers could fit in with the fluff
remember if your using ogres for demigryphs the base size is important
and if you are not worried about money i would go fo the forge world landship for a steam tank, ironside hadgunners and some other heavy armour state troops if you want the look of elite troops, pricey but they look very nice imo

Thanks for the feedback everybody.
I got a little too enthused and started working on sketches for the scratch built stank. 0.o Once i get supplies I'll start cracking.
If my efforts aren't too laughable, I'll upload pics.

I've had a Marienburg army in my head for quite some time, will be building it next year I think.
Ogres, lead by the ogre maneater 'pirate'.
Warrior Priests of Manaan, God of the Sea. Also great modelling opportunity for a Manaan war altar.
Marienburg has a very large 'ghetto' of Sea Elves, so using 'counts as' high elf models for the wizard (heavens) and light cav.
Making heavy cav using a mixed unit of exiled knights (empire, brettonian, high elf, volands venators, mounted mordheim figures).
No steam tank but taking the land ship. Also Manans blades unit.
No hellfire but plenty of cannons and mortars (no Nuln, but plenty of ships for cannons).
Lots of well outfitted halberdier units/detachments and well paid greatswords (The Directors of Marienburg put a lot of cash into having a strong army btw, to keep the Empire's local lords away).
Lots of 'scum' units of militia/free company representing ship's crews come ashore to fight.
Look out for the WHFRP supplement Marienburg: Sold Down The River as it's really fething amazingly filled with lore, info and history of the city. It will give you tons of ideas!

Thanks for the feedback everybody.
I just finished up the "rough draft" of the Landship, and even without wheels, a Mast/smokestack, or a bowsprit, it's pretty large. It's about 4 inches high, 3 across and seven long at it's longest point.
Anybody have a rough idea of the dimensions of the standard stank or Landship?
