Hi Dakka, I am organising an apocalypse game of about 14 people, where a winner wins a prize. 2 teams will comprise of 7 people (with various armies) but an overall winner needs to be drawn. The fairest idea I have though of is '1 point for every 100 points of models killed' and the person with the most points at the end wins. The main problem with this is having to note down every model (or group of) killed by each individual to tally up at the end, as this will slow the game down alot (and as I am refereeing aswell, I will already have alot to do.)

Does anyone else have any ideas how I could determine a winner in an easier but still fair and balanced way?

The best way to organize and run a competitive Apocalypse game: don't.

Apocalypse is completely broken if you try to play it competitively, and the only question becomes "do any of your players have the models to bring the most overpowered game breaking stuff". Trying to play it competitively will ruin any enjoyment of the game for the players who don't have the most broken Apocalypse army, and even the winners probably aren't going to have much fun with a one-sided slaughter that takes all day to resolve.

It is not really a case of not playing it, as the gaming store who has asked me to organise it has already set a date and players have already signed up.
There will be rules in place to keep it as balanced as possible, such as only units available in standard 40k, so no super-heavies, titans etc, follow the FoC and play a 1500pt list.
I am also going to attempt to restrict some powers such as Imotekhs nightfighting to only work to protect that players units and his lightning to work on 2d6 units.

Oh, and the game is going to take place over 3 days.

Competitive Apocalypse? Hrm...Be right back, modding a dozen Damocles Rhinos

My best advice would be to hand out scratch papers and have the players write the name of the player who brought the most fun and interesting force, with the winner determined by popular vote.

Just cancel the game. Apocalypse without the big stuff isn't Apocalypse. It isn't fun, and since you don't have any single expensive models to take up a lot of points without needing to roll very many dice the game is going to take forever and consist of standing around waiting for your target to finish rolling saves against another player so you can finally get to shoot at it.

IOW, you're going to invent random house rules. Don't bother, you're inevitably going to miss something, and you're probably going to break something with your rules. If a unit is too much of a problem to allow it, just ban it entirely instead of trying to come up with some alternate "fair" version.

Why not have the 2 sides duke it out, and then do a tournament where the players from the winning side all vie for supremacy. I personally think that an Apoc game will not work how you are trying to make it work. It will be no fun, and it'll be hard to make a winner since that doesn't exist in Apoc. Apoc is just a game to have fun and pull models off of the board. A lack of Super Heavies is kind of lame in my opinion.

A single game of Apoc can get a little boring after 3-4 hours of play. I can't imagine playing multiple games of Apoc, especially without superheavies. Especially with 14 people, the turns are going to take forever. It'll feel like one long, drawn out game.

What we did at our store is have a league where people faced off against each other and collected wins, which were balanced by planet cards that they could capture (giving them more points, with no abilities, or less points and a cool ability to use in battle).
In the end we all played an Apoc game to finish the campaign and it was a lot of fun.

Do it in teams of 3.

Then make two people on each team make their list 2 weeks before the tournament and publish those lists to all participants.

The 3rd teammate only needs to reveal his list as the tournament starts.
