So it's been a while since WHFB with me, but the new Empire book has got me fired up. After a year or two away, I'm rearing to get back in. But I'm extremely unfamiliar with the 8th edition rules, so this is just a little something I pieced together, and I would love some opinions on it.

Arch Lector- 200
Meteoric armor, Obsidian Blade

Captain of the Empire- 83
Full Plate, Shield, Gold Sigil Sword

Captain of the Empire- 91
BSB, full plate

Luthur Huss- 155

25 Swordsmen- 315
Banner, Musician
Detachment 10 Free company
Detachment 10 Halberdiers

10 Handgunners- 90

10 Handgunners- 90

9 Knights of the Inner Circle- 255
Full Command

30 Greatswords-360
Full Command

Great Cannon- 120

Mortar- 100

this leaves me with around 140 points left.... I don't really have a solid plan here. Huss goes with the knights, the Lector and BSB goes in with the great swords, and then the other general goes with the Swordsmen so they can stay around a little longer. The ranged element is meant to pepper at people and soften up units. I welcome suggestions, but please be civilized and respectful. I realize I haven't done this in a while.

The other CAPTAIN goes with the swordsmen. My bad, also Lector would be the actual general.

Wel, working down your list from the top:
Arch lector is good, obsidian blade is a little overkill, idnbe tempted to simply give him a GW instead (-3 is usually enough for everything but heavy cav))
Huss is nice, quite expensive for a mounted priest but the 4++ and 'hulk smash' mode are tasty. I would be tempted to drop the non-bsb captain and take another warrior priest though.
Core-wise, 25 swords isnt enough of an anvil, you need at least 30+, and free company are pretty useless, as are 10 halberds. If it were me, id swap the swords for halberds (40, inna horde), and for detachments, take 2 units of 5 archers (chaff, and useful for getting in the way). If you have already built the swords, take 35 in a column, but the priest is essential for the hatred + bound spells. 10 handgunners wont do an awful lot (seriously, if im short of points, i drop these guys first. If you are set on them, take 20 as a detachment for the big core unit (or as many as you can). Id usually stick the BSB in with these guys, not the GS.
On to them, almost perfect. Stick in the standard of discipline, and you have a tasty Ld10 general bubble. Mortar isnt worth it now, the strength2 kills it. Take a second cannon...

What concerns me the most is no wizard, you really want to try and squeeze in a level 3, at least. Its 165 for a bare-bones level 3 wizard, you should be able to fit him in.

Overall a nice list, a few tweaks and it should do really well. Have you tried it yet?

Not yet, I'm just theory crafting until a game this weekend. Like I said I haven't been involved in fantasy a ton lately. So a revision would be a little like this....

Arch Lector- 155
Meteoric armor, Great Weapon, General

Wizard Lord- 190
Dispel scroll

Warrior Priest- 82
Heavy Armor, Enchanted Shield, Biting Blade (don't want him to roll over in a challenge)

Captain of the Empire- 91
BSB, full plate

Luthur Huss- 155

35 Swordsmen- 335
Banner, Musician
Detachment 5 archers
Detachment 5 archers

9 Knights of the Inner Circle- 255
Full Command

30 Greatswords-375
Full Command
Standard of discipline

Great Cannon- 120

Great Cannon- 120

still leaves me with over a 120 points. How do you like Hurricanums? Better yet, a halberd detachment for the great swords. And where exactly do my leaders end up at?

Hurricanums are all sorts of sexy awesome fun times, the +1 power dice is nice, but the 6" +1to hit bubble is pure win, offsets our average WS so that we hit on 3s, plus a hatred reroll...
I would drop one unit of archers from the swords and give them to the greatswords, that way you have two skirmish screens.

Arch lector in the greatswords (makes him Ld10!), bsb in either (or floating on his own behind your guys), and other priest in the swordsmen.
If you dropped one greatsword, youd free up enough points to take a champion in the swordsmen (challenge fodder), and a shield on your bsb, and still have a unit of 30. Have you thought about magic lores?

Unless you take shadow or beasts, swordsmen are a bit of a let down. Now, 40 halberdiers, backed up with wildform and the hurricanum will do more damage. Also, I would give your BSB the Armour of silvered steel so he can survive. Greatswords are ok, but I would advise on taking 35 in a 6*6 With the BSB in the corner, so you can minimise incoming damage and maintain ranks, whilst still keeping a fair number of outgoing attacks.

I haven't looked at the lores of magic a lot, but lore of light seems pretty good. The swordsmen aren't there to do a lot of damage, they're there to be a tar pit and then flank charge with knights. If I give the BSB the enchanted shield he then has a 2+, and then a normal shield to the other priest. Challenge fodder in my opinions is kind of asking for bad combat res...But I could be wrong. Reassigning some archers seems solid, then if I drop a single greatswordsman and use my remaining points I can also get a hurricanum, which seems good

Swordsmen are in a column, so should have plenty of ranks, ergo be steadfast. who would you rather die in a Challenge, a 10point sergeant or the 100 point hero?

Keep the dude cheap as possible. He is there for the killing blow against a chosen character.
